Why should anyone question it when Microsoft have been charging to play online since 2005?
I believe it was late 2002 when Live launched and cost a yearly (or maybe monthly as well, I don't remember) sub back then too.
But I can add what they did with backwards compatibility though. Sony removed that so they could sell Playstation 1+2 games on the PSN store. Granted Microsoft did it first, but still.
Maybe for PS2 but backwards compat as far as I know for PS1 is still able by every PS3? Plus the old PS3 models were a bit of a mix, some had software emulation for ps2 and some had ps2 parts in them! Which were scrapped for cost reasons, but they could have at least kept the emulation, that I agree.
