How can i access my own IP webcam?

Just bought a Edimax IP Camera but having problems trying to access it. I can type in the IP address on IE and it works but im unsure it will work when i try log on ourside of my own network.

Do i need to tell it to upload to a server or anythin?

You need to set up some port forwarding on your router.

Have a quick search on Google for port forwarding for your model and it will give you instructions on how to forward requests to access the IP camera.

Once you have done this, it should work without fault.

my routers LAN IP address is not the same as the routers public IP address is it? trying to find its public address?

No, it'll be whatever IP Sky assign to it - which could change. www.whatismyip.com should show it.

thanks, done that and got 90.195.135.203 but how is entering that address let me accesse an IP cam when that IP address will just goto the router?

Port forwarding. You will be informed on what port the IP camera listens (likely 80) which you need to forward in the firewall rules for the router to your LAN IP. Also, you will need to setup a DynDns service because you have a dynamic IP.

EDIT: Yes, it works fine, I went to your IP @ port 80 and it gave me a login box for the IP Camera. You wouldn't have been able to check this yourself due to loopback - don't ask.

Go to dyndns.org and setup a free account. Then add a host i.e. <whateveryouwant>.dyndns.org and then setup your account info in your Sky router under the dynamic DNS section and that way, if you ever want to watch your camera from outside, simply type <whateveryoutyped>.dyndns.org.

I would also consider changing the default port away from 80 for security purposes.

so you went to 90.195.135.203:80 and that went to the ip cam? i do that hear and it goes to my router?

EDIT: logged in over another pc and it does work yeah! i'll change the port and set up that account although not sure how it works!

dyndns.com or no-ip.com have a piece of software that will sit on a machine on your network and automatically update at a set time. The software updates the current connected external IP with that of the DNS entries in either of the two companies routing tables.

Hence your current IP: 90.195.135.203 is mapped to http:\\example.no-ip.org

The software can be configured to check every 4 hours (eg) for an update... so when it changes it tells http:\\example.no-ip.org to point to the new IP address...

Just allows you to access wherever you are, save having to get the external IP all the time!

pah! Though i had it working then before. Decided to try it on the wireless, can access it internally on the network but when i try access it from outside, nope!

worked before too, all i changed was the port and unplug the ethernet cable. I changed to the port forward in the router also.....hmmm

sorted, changed port back to 80 and it worked???

so you changed the port in the webcam settings, changed the port forwarding on the router, then what, no joy? Are you going via the ddns address or via the ip?

Your LAN and Wireless even tho on the same computer will more than likely have different internal IP addresses.

It's nothing to do with port forwarding, wifi or anything else. The DG834GT with official (Netgear) firmware doesn't have NAT loopback. If you flash to DGTeam firwmare not only will you have more security features at your disposal, you'll have telnet enabled by default (for LAN admin users) and also NAT loopback.

Flash to DGTeam fw, and you'll be able to loop back through the router to your own public IP WITHOUT seeing the router's login page

Easy once you know how. At the moment, you're trying to access your public IP but the router is recognising that you're doing so from inside the LAN, so it presents you with a login prompt. NAT loopback will effectively mirror your request on the internet and back in again as though you were connecting from outside the LAN. Sky User (forum) have details of how to flash the DG834GT safely (and retrieve your Sky username and password).

But watch out for the fact that Sky are updating the firmwares over the next 3 months of the DG834GT's and they will be tracking which routers have been updated, enquiring about the ones that fail. It's on the SKyUser forum somewhere.

Ask tier 3 (CST or whatever they're called now) for a static IP address. You'll have to push a bit but it's definitely possible. I'm on the same network (via UK Online) and I've got a static address

Are you sure? I want a static IP - I would be happy to pay a good £5 a month for it, but I just don't think they give them out. What could be a possible reason? You are not supposed to run a server under the T&C's...

Gadge, I already mentioned DynDns. Sing up for an account there and then input the details into your router and this will automatically update your IP with them, allowing you to use a hostname which you will set in their domain.
