How can Linux beat Windows?

You dived headfirst into a *nix installation from Windows?

Ohh dear... :D

I don't want dual boot, because I want to stick with Ubuntu when testing at my university and it's perfect and light OS for me....but it just didn't support my printer at home .....;), I have try some suggesttions but failed..

hi,

I have tested linux based OS (Ubuntu) but I think one important thing should be improved to challenge windows.

1. Offer better compatibality for hardware and software

Stick with it m8 you will be a better person for it just read the above to see my point.

It wont, it doesnt have a viable support option for companies, doesnt have a huge corporation backing it, it doesnt have a simple means to get certified, the public dont like change.

And that would be why I spent ages ripping apart drivers to get a graphics card to work with Windows 7. Ubuntu? It just worked - I didn't do anything.

Horses for courses as they say. Is there any popcorn left? :)

What's wrong with running Apache or IIS on a desktop? :p

This post brought to you by randomness and deliberately missing the point. :p

I wasn't aware that we were limiting this to "general public" applications, which basically just means a web browser for 90% of people. :p

No but this debate is quite obviously about a desktop OS. I don't run a web server on my desktop. The overwhelming majority of computer users don't either.

It's a trend in these sort of threads, pull up a chair and join the club :p

yeah, but many external hardwares like printers , modems , routers still windows only stuffs....

I hope more hardwares and softwares are supported by Ubuntu in future plus they (Canonical) got increasing partners for Ubuntu OS for now....

It won't make a difference, if it supported every hardware going, still wouldnt make a difference. The majority of people stick to what they know, the majority and going to change their pre-installed OS with an alternative that they will have to learn afresh.

It's not really about sticking to what people know, I'm sure a lot of people would switch or not even noticed if someone switched for them if they could still do everything they currently do in Mac OS or Windows, but the application support just isn't there. And the procedure to find and install a more often than not inferior clone of their favourite apps is more hassle than it's worth.

*hugs macbook*

In fairness l like to use linux (not ubuntu, never liked it) but windows just has the gameing aspect sown up (apart from fm and civ4 on osx....)

Eitherway dons some pop corn
