How can people be so daft at using a microwave grill ...

Every house on the street that I live on came with an uber high end 1000w microwave grill built into the kitchen units, along with an oven underneath.

The microwave also comes with a special metallic plate to use with the grill setting, and all the foods that can be cooked in the thing are written on a long sticker on the inside of the microwave door - pizzas, chips, fish, chicken, burgers etc, probably the only thing that cant be done is a whole chicken or turkey obviously.

You name anything that can be bought frozen from a supermarket, you can stick it onto the microwave grill, push one button that says 'crisp' to activate the right function, set the time and viola, it cooks, easy peasy.

Neither my dad, mum, nor brother can figure out how to do this, they see me cooking everything I eat in the microwave on a metallic plate, and they are absolutely astonished and dumbfounded as to how I could possibly cook my frozen meats, chips, veggie burgers and waffles in the microwave instead of having to heat up the oven everytime.

I always tell them very simply - 'All you do is push the 'crisp' button, set the time according to the grill instructions on the box, and put your food on the grill tray'.

So today I was in the kitchen grabbing a drink, and my mum started off a conversation that someones 24 year old son had just returned home from wherever, and his mum was having to cook everything for him (like, seriously?). Apparantly she wanted to figure out how her son could use the microwave to cook his own food like I do, and she had my mum to ask me how I do it.

My mum asked me again - 'How do you cook your food in the microwave? So and so wants to know because shes fed up of cooking food everyday for her son who just came back home'.

I chortled, I couldnt contain myself, I literally raged at the immense level of stupidity found among the three people, two mothers who cant understand how to push one button on a microwave, and some other person around my age who still cant feed himself or simply figure out how to use the grill on his own and still requires his mother to feed him?

YOU PRESS JUST ONE BUTTON!!!! How many times do I have to stand in front of the silly bints and go 'look, this button here, press it, look, my food on this tray, put it inside the microwave, look, the time required is written on the box, turn the dial to that time and it cooks!'.

And they are still like 'Durrrrrr herpderp, but just how and what are you doing? How are you cooking your food in the microwave, why cant you cook some of your stuff for us because we cant figure out how to use the microwave grill ourselves '

Some people are just a waste of brain cells.

I dont eat that stuff everyday, most days I eat steamed vegetables.

Ok, slightly redeemed yourself;)

i don't think you're going to find much love for microwaves in here though! They're certainly useful but I don't really use them beyond defrosting/reheating and wouldn't particularly want to either, regardless of how easy it is. I enjoy cooking too much:)

Yea thats fine, but here Im talking about a 24 year old who cant / wont cook anything for himself, and expects his mother to do it all for him, and she was fed up to the point that she asked for my help on how I cook my own food in the microwave?

I dont expect anyone else to cook for me, and I dont like cooking so I figured out how to use the microwave grill, and my life changed forever! Its so simple and unbelievably convenient :)

This is what I normally eat:

And either Birds Eye Omega 3 fish fingers, 100% chicken fillets, or Vegetable Quarter Pounders full of carrot, sweetcorn, brocolli and peas. And occasionally eggs, pasta, or wholemeal bread.

Cereal, cakes, bananas, cucumbers and yogurt / muller rice pots too ofc, yummers.

Only thing I would eat there are the Babybels.

Pre-packed vacuum veg. Not good.

Get some fresh stuff in and cook it properly man! Cheaper, tastier and healthier. ;)

Slightly old fashioned anyone?

Combi microwaves are the future! What's the point in heating up a large oven when you can do exactly the same cooking in a much smaller oven...

For example... Roast potatoes: Wash and *****, insert into hot oven for 1-2 hours... Or, wash and *****, set combi and insert into microwave for 15 minutes. exactly the same result (crisp skin and tasty inside).
Vegetables: Stick pan on hob, wait for water to boil and add veg, wait 10 minutes... or stick veg in pot with some water and an unsealed top and insert into microwave for 5 minutes. Exactly the same results.;)

There is a massive difference between normal microwaves and combi microwaves, there's a reason they are called microwave ovens (yes you can just use the convection setting without grill or microwave setting as well if you want to cook properly traditional).:p

Can you take pictures of some of these roast spuds from the microwave grill? I am slightly dubious of the crispy skin being the same as some nicely fluffed up and roasted potatoes, although I could very well be wrong! :)

Never in a million years will potatoes come out the same in the microwave as they do when cooked properly. If they do, you are seriously doing it wrong.

I'd love to see some of your microwave-cooked potatoes.

I used to say the same, but try the special setting on the microwave and it's completely different to 'on full for 10 minutes'.

On a standard microwave you wouldn't eat the skin but I'm quite willing to believe a combi would solve this.

good baked tatty takes time, boil it for 30+ minutes untill it feels soft and the skin is starting to try and fall off, meanwhile heat an oven on 230. cover the tattys in olive oil and whack in the oven for 10-15 minutes, havnt tasted skins like it befor ein my life, make up some extra strong thin garlic sauce, throw on some smoked cured ham cut in thin strips and top with cheese with some leaf dressing on the side, no microwave oven combi can beat that!
