How can people get the lyrics so badly wrong?

But I misheard them as:
I got no thumb, but it grew back again.
You're never gonna keep me down.

One of my friends' mum seemed to think that the lyrics to Radiohead's Karma Police went:

"For a minute there, I wet myself"

Cue incessant laughing for the following months.
