How damaged is this chip

BillytheImpaler said:
The chip itself might work but with a badly damaged IHS you'll have a rough time cooling it. Perhaps you should just remove the IHS and test it, especially as at this point you haven't much to lose.

Now that I've answered your question you should answer mine: How did it get damaged?

The pic looks like its from ebay so id imagine someones selling it as damaged.

Bugger! Given up hope on the thing.

Guy contacted me. Apparently the gold connecters (there are no pins?) have been scraped of and the little things in the middle of the cpu have been broken.

Oh well

See how much it goes for though . . . . Id be curious.
And thats right, the pins are on the socket not the chip. Better way around imo. Less chance of damage occuring.

dunno, but if you damage something the mobo is whats needs to be scrapped. easier to replace cpu than the mobo. but cheaper to replace mobo than that cpu.

Probably installed by someone who didnt realise Intel processors are supposed to be a tight fit, and got their dad to help install it using his favorite hammer......

Oh wait.. thats been done before :P

No way intel would accept that processor back under warrenty (retail or otherwise), its been physically destroyed.

I reckon it would be fine :) Although if a guy is selling it, surely he'd hang onto it if it were ok rather than try to flog it as damaged.

to true. Contacted him again for a price. ;)

The muppet still thinks that they retail for £650 and that its still worth nearly as much.

He still thinks you can get warrenty even though it is oem and bulldozed

wtf, was it rolled over by something? :D If the caps are damaged its a goner, since those were damaged and by the looks of the IHS the core might now be powder in there. I'd pay at most a fiver inc.. and just have a laugh trying out the warranty :D

When using a hammer to install a intel cpu, make sure to use a block of wood between the CPU and hammer or you may damage the cpu...You can tell went you hit it with the right force as it should show three splits in the motherboard went seated all the way in...

lmao! thats the funniest thing I have heard all week

If the caps on the underside have gone to cap heaven then the CPU is a gonna, if the seller is so convinced that it can be RMA'ed then why the hell doesn't he do this as he'll be able to get much more then selling it as it is.

it went for £112 on the bay

There's one born every minute. I imagine intel would reject any warrenty claim on that even if it was Retail, let alone OEM.

Still not as good as the ebay who sold an X-Box Box. It was just an empty cardboard X-Box packing box, but the description was 'clear enough' for most people, but someone paid top dollar for it, and then complained that it was just an empty box :P

It'll be an insurance scammer that's bought it. You stick it in a motherboard, and drop it down a flight of stairs. Oopsie!
