How did the OcUK Forums get so Big?

From what I can tell, that's wrong.

Look at Overclock.net, which they rank at 98:

http://www.overclock.net/f/

Less users online, less posts in the forums. Don't forget that OcUK prunes threads, or used to.

If that's at 98, then OcUK could be quite a bit higher in fact.

IIRC when we used to prune threads we were popping in and out of one of the top lists depending on which day of the month you checked (we pruned monthly).

OcUK forums are huge due to hard work and corporate espionage.

A while back they sent a high-ranking member (hi there!) to scout out the opposition's forums and steal all their posters.

Seems to have done the trick ;)

I was a lot younger when I joined here and it was so long ago I have no clue how I found the forums, I do remember buying goldfinger devices so I expect it was related to making them work

Awesome place and I've made some great friends here to boot :)

If that's true, then how on earth did LolGibbo not get found out and banned?

Well I think it was partly down to the fact the word quickly spread throughout the 'forum world', that if you were a 'bad boy' on OcUK, then the lovely people there actually sent you on a holiday! ;)

So of course they thought that if they were extra 'good', then something really special might be given to them... and low and behold... it was! :)

I was bored one day, typed "UK Forums" into Google and this was one of the top results. I've bought a few things from the store since then, but it hasn't been my main hardware supplier. Twice I've had a problem with free shipping, and twice 5UB has immediately refunded me the cost though so I can't complain about the customer service.

I wondered how I got here. :D

A few things for me. Quality of moderation, lack of animated gifs, tidy design all help. The wide variety of sub forums is another major factor. A lot of people start with the computer related ones and then migrate into the others.

A mate of mine ordered some gear from the store way back in 2006, that's when i joined and have enjoyed the forums ever since, not got many posts in 6 years but go on every day, used to go on Pc advisor forums before that!!!
Have just looked at my first post on here and it was advice on how to Overclock a 6600gt AGP version

Informative (yes, on a ‘niche’ basis) yet still manages to help even beginners who would never have thought to ‘build-your-own’ and fun to read (even the ‘silly’ threads have made me chuckle over the years) have made the forums popular.

That and the taser (built into every unit case) chain-shock until you do a daily log-in. :p
