How did you pay your way through University?

Working throughout the academic years(part-time) and the holidays(full-time). Wasnt much fun as I was not enjoying looking forward to the weekends and the fact that the 1st class slipped away from me makes me feel like I maybe did a mistake in regards to the amount of work but still...somehow feels good knowing that I paid for it all myself and owe nothing for it now.

I was lucky that it only cost £1500 per year when i was in Uni, compare to my peers where they were charged £7000. do a couple of part time job paid for nearly everything...

My brother paid for my degree, a student loan covered living costs and helped me leave university with £10,000 in an ISA. And I took a career development loan to pay for my masters.

Just interested to see what people did, I'm not there yet.

Did you get a job? Cash from parents? Lived off the grant and loans?

Grant and loans mostly covered it, parents paid a few bits like a stock of food at start of term, the odd rent when in trouble. Savings took care of the rest.

You definitely wont have time for a job and doing any degree of value. A degree is a full time commitment, be prepared to spend at least 60 hours a week working.

Your best bet is to take 1 year out after college, getting a Fulltime Job, Work the whole year earning around 10-14K, Then goto Uni for the next 3 years!

Then all your Depts would have already been paid, i cant understand why people do not do this.. Theres no rush at all to goto Uni.

Been working part time since the age of 16 so thats never changed for me!

My Dad earns a stupid amount of money which means I get a terrible loan every year usually around the £500 a year mark so my part time wages are crucial to me going to uni!

Pay for it all myself!

you could argue that if you dont need to do this then that year out is wasted doing a nothing job for £10-£14k rather than going swtraight to uni getting into debt and being a year up the career ladder

its all a personal choice

Yeah i guess, some people want to goto College, Uni then right into work for the rest of their lives. You should all really travel aroudn the world or somthing for a year after all that work!

But why not reverse that. Why not go to university, get the degree, then work for a year to pay off all your debts with the added advantage hat with the degree you should be earning significantly more and also will be gaining work experience within your area of expertise and not stacking shelves in Tescos.

Working before you start only makes sense if you stay at home so you can save the money. This may not be so appealig after you have been to university and got used to being drunk at 2pm.

I have a part time job that pays pretty well and get small contributions from my parents, though my main source of money is the student loan and job.

I ran a couple of businesses/ventures whilst at college and uni which helped fund my undergrad. I also had the minimum student loan to help pay for things. Parents only covered my rent for my undergrad but I'm now doing my masters and paying for both rent and £17k of fees myself. I'm still self-employed to fund whatever I want to do.

Sounds interesting, what kind of businesses/ventures were they if you dont mind me asking?

I was very, very lucky. I'm an only child and both my parents have good jobs. They paid for my first two years and most of my final year. I had a bit of money saved up from my industrial placement but it wasn't much.

The people who get penalised the most are those with parents who have the money to pay for their child's education on paper but can't/won't. A friend of mine had basically been disowned by his family. He had to pay for everything himself and was only entitled the the minimum student loan. :( He spent a lot of time round our house, eating our frozen chips!

Dont have to pay any fees up here, i live at home and commute into glasgow (about 10 miles), either a fiver on the train or cheaper in the car, so all i need is a part time job to give me enough money to live on, dont really have any outgoings proper. because my mum and dad earn a decent amount of money, i wouldnt be entitled to any kind of help or decent loan so i didnt bother. i dont even have an overdraft, im completely debt free.

also have a decent bit of money saved up, enough to pay a good few months rent if i move out.
