how did zoom become so popular?

We use zoom at work despite being on the google ecosystem. It seems reliable and fast and doesn't cause my ****** mac to have a fit like Teams does.

this is seriously confusing me.

it doesn't seem to offer anything that it's already mainstream competitors (skype, teams, discord etc) didn't already offer, and yet for some reason people have become obsessed with it.

as far as i can see it's a broken mess with a frankly annoying ui.

does anyone know why people seem to like it?

Easy - you don't need admin rights to install it :D Lost count of the number of our devices that have Zoom installed, even when they already had the dying out Skype, and Teams... I'd also expect word of mouth/over-hearing "Zoom" lead lots to install it too.

We use Zoom a lot for work. I'd be on a plane every other week around the world normally, but now Zoom has mostly replaced that. Teams for the odd occasion Zoom is blocked at the customer's location.

It's simple, easy to set up, works well. Easy to record and distribute meetings etc.

Lack of 2FA?

Ha! Not to mention the absolute steaming pile of lies and garbage surrounding their 'encryption'. It's the same as Facebook, WhatsApp, TikTok et al. - someone uses it, so everyone else does. Inertia does the rest. They don't care whether it's technically proficient, profiling them up the wazoo for advertisers or scraping their phone (and face) for the CCP - they just follow the meme of whatever's in vogue, like everyone else. Nobody ever stops to wonder who pushed so hard for it to become the default, or why...
