How do HMRC justify it?

I'm just letting them send it back at their cost and i've set up a dropbox account now to sort it out. It's just hard to justify how they can work out that a 16gb USB stick is worth over £70.

It's not like it's easy to claim the charges back either, first you have to find a code for the item, which could come under many different ones in a PDF document of over 900 pages before you can even speak to somebody on the phone, i can't be bothered with all the hassle, so they can send it back at more cost to them.

It's not about the cost, it's the principle. I'm trying to figure out how they work out a 16gb usb stick that cost less that £10 can warrant VAT of £14.40

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, what was on the invoice? The one that accompanied the parcel?

OK, what site would be best to set up a free account that's accessible worldwide and so that they can upload RAW files?

Thanks

I don't think many free ones will come with enough space to hold a wedding worth of RAWs. I would just buy a month of DropBox for £8 (you get 1TB) and cancel it once the photos are transferred to your PC and backed up.

Out of curiosity, what happens when it gets sent back? Do they try to charge the sender the fee?

So what if the sender doesn't pay? Will it just get sent back and forth in some twisted game of piggy in the middle? Where the piggy is stuck with the ball, desperate for any kind of human interaction to validate their miserable pointless existence, whilst the other players simply continue with their lives, oblivious to the pain and suffering they're causing to the piggy? Sorry piggy, but your life has no purpose, just kill yourself now!

Someone, presumably the sender, put a higher value on the import form. £14.40 is the VAT at 20% on a £72.00 item.
Andi.

I just had to pay £11.50 for something valued at £17

£3.50 VAT and £8 royal mail charge. I feel like the £15 cut-off is either too low, or the admin fee should be on a sliding scale.

Edit: maybe if the admin fee was the lower of either the VAT applied or £8.
