How do I plug it in!?

Nobody should use ethernet cables unless they know how to wire them either surely!

If they install them yes, how else would they know the difference between a crossover and a straight through.

Same with plugs, if you are male then you should have learnt the basics of survival in the 21st century by now, amongst such skills is jamming three wires into a bit of plastic and making it look like the diagram above.

I can't accept that there are people on this forum who can't wire up a plug without being shown first... :(

What you've got there, is a USA plug, and an EU Convertor :p
I'd be asking weather whatever piece of equipment it is attached to is OK for 240V too!

Wiring a plug knowledge is obsolete.

^ this. I wasn't saying it was hard, I'm saying it was an over-reaction from that guy before. Plenty of people would take their computer into the purple shirt place to get extra RAM added. To us that seems silly but there's nothing wrong with ignorance, their interests just lie elsewhere. I wouldn't expect most women, and a good proportion of men, would be able to rewire a plug.

I know how to rewire a plug, yet I still look it up every time.

really? do you also look up the alphabet or the first nine numbers to make sure you have them right too?

Seriously people, a plug has three wires. how hard is it to remember that the green and yellow one is earth, the brown one goes on the fuse and the blue one goes on the last one?

So the fact that this device has an American socket fitted and from this you can deduce that it is an American product all the experts here would just fit a three pin plug to it and not worry about there being no brown or blue wires?

The American wiring colours for household appliances are Black, White and Green.

Apparently it's not or we wouldn't get threads like this?

Well, really, yes it is because everything comes with plugs and adapters are everywhere. I can't work out how knowing how to do something that is not needed any more can make people feel superior. I suspect all these people give tips on how to feed dinosaurs ;)

i havent had to wire a plug in about 17 years.

you dont wire a plug everyday where as generally most people use the alphabet or maths.

btw i can happily solder electronics and i built an rc heli from kit the other month, but to wire a plug i would have to check im doing it right

Funnily enough I'm about to wire a plug - I went to get my compressor out and ran over the old plug and it broke.

Wish me luck guys, I've been reading up for the hour or so and I think I'm ready.

I check each time, a 2 second google images search is worth it.

Can count the number of times I've rewired a plug on one hand, I've simply not had the need to do it

I had to do it for my old mum, she bought a set of straighteners in the US which surprisingly enough would take 100 to 240 volts, so I chopped the end off and wired it into a plug.

I checked the internet before I started, 3 different sources, and I checked during several times and again afterwards very carefully. When I plugged it in I was scared to flip the switch.

I don't know if things have changed since I learned how to wire a plug 20+ years ago, but back then I'm quite sure I'd have just gone ahead and done it. Does the internet being there as a source to check mean we've lost the self confidence to do things without checking? Nobody limped until we got the crutch?

Why were you scared to flip the switch?

Do you understand what the fuse does and why it's on the brown wire?
