Hi guys,

Can anyone explain to me how, when I VPN into work, I stop firefox going through the VPN and using my connection at work?

Web browsing is painfully slow when the VPN is connected as it seems to transmit the request through that rather than just using the DSL connection. The VPN is solely connected so I can remote desktop into the machine there. Firefox is opened up on my machine, not through remote desktop in case that's what you were thinking! ;)

Any ideas? Ta.

go to network connections
right click the VPN connection and bring up the properties
then networking tab > internet protocol (TCP/IP)> properties>advanced
untick box that says "use default gateway on remote network"

the above worked for me when I had the same thing

Cheers - I'll try that.

edit - I've just done that and now remote desktop doesn't want to connect :(

Not sure about that , sorry , I just had the problem that all internet traffic was being routed via the vpn if it was connected , I wasn't using remote desktop

IP.

I'm not overly au fais with all this VPN lark so for clarity and my own understanding I'll type out how I have it:

Main Machine -> VPN through DSL -> Works Machine

RDP -> VPN -> Works Machine

Firefox on main machine -> DSL

however at present it seems that firefox wants to go -> VPN via DSL -> Works Machine

When I untick that box, nothing seems to route through the VPN.

Sounds like the routing is messed up somewhere... Just wondering... what's the IP of the work and home machine?

Are they possibly on the same subnet?

You need to speak to your IT support. A VPN connection will usually tunnel all traffic unless configured for split tunneling which in your case would only tunnel work traffic. This presents a security problem because your machine would be facing both your work and the internet at the same time so it may not be allowed.

By the sound of it he is using PPTP through the Windows inbuilt VPN function which i don't believe has the functionality to stop people from bypassing the VPN for internet traffic. Could be wrong though.

If he is using pptp and he checks the option "use default gateway on remote network" he will need to add routes manually via dos prompt for the work Lan.

best to clarify what vpn client he is using.

Cheers guys. Screw that then, it's too much effort! I was only wondering because it slows down my web browsing to 56k speeds but it's no problem, I'll just disconnect if I need to.

Ta!

Not necessarily, I've set it like that loads of times without needing to add routes
