How do I stop HDD from waking-up?

My main drive is an SSD but I have a HDD as a secondary. The problem I have is that when I do certain things on my PC (e.g. a start-menu search) my HDD spins up and makes my desktop essentially freeze up for around 10 seconds. This is a bit annoying and I was hoping to find a way to stop it from doing this.

I want it to spin up only when I navigate to it through Windows Explorer, or when I use a programme that access files on the drive (e.g. WMP, due to the fact that I have music files on the HDD). Is there any way to do this?

in windows power saving profile, click change plan settings/change advanced plan settings and look for hdd and turn off the sleep/power saving for it

But won't that just mean it's on all the time? I don't really want that either. Ideally I want it to power down most of the time, and only open when I do very specific things with it.

whenever it wakes up it will do this. best just to make it so that it never spins down. Yes it uses power but don't think it harms the drive

that's what the freezing is

its waking the hdd from sleep/power saving,my storage hdd does it

to turn it off means the hdd spins all the time
