How do I stop the cd-rom drive starting up when browsing directories?

For some reason in windows 7 the cd-rom drive will start up for no apparant reason when the save file dialogue box opens or when I'm browsing directories looking for a file to open, this causes a delay as the drive spins up, how do I stop this happening? Autorun is disabled.

Disconnect the drive?

This is done by the system evaluating the path, as part of that it polls all the drives. If the drive is connected and has media in, it will spin it up to poll it.

Can't I just stop the system polling optical drives?

Just browse the directories you require and not explorer.

For example make a shortcut to D:\ or whatever the path is and access all your porn that way.

But explorer comes up automatically when I try to upload a file in the web browser etc.

But I don't want to have to take the CD out every time I browse for a file, that's even more inconvenient.
