Not all perhaps, but I think overall the trend is down with the exception possibly of Oxbridge and some others.

I'd say that it only effects modern unis. i haven't studied glass plate unis particularly carefully, but I don't think that any London redbricks have been compromised.

That's the whole problem isn't it - a stupid arbitrary figure which Blair chose, based on the false premise that having a degree automatically means someone is well educated and will be a valuable addition to the UK workforce. Low entry requirements (in many, not all universities) and the creation of mickey mouse degrees makes that far from the case.

I read an analysis in the Guardian (which I buy when I feel I have consumed enough Daily Mail to have had my opinions completely formed for me, I'll admit it - we cant pull the wool over the eyes of everyone at Overclockers forever) that Blair might extend his legacy by turning London School of Economic (currently the foremost University to study politics at) into a state-sponsored college to study politics at. He may choose to place himself as the dean of this college, hence he will be able to control the political education of every significant politician for years to come.
It would be classic Labour policy, as long as they were confident that they could achieve it without their power being usurped by a rival party at some point.

is this thread going to turn into "Your Favorate Gifs"?
wish I could get enough money to go off to uni!

I think now would be an ideal time for you to go, you'd still blend in with all the freshers, but you might well be better placed to make the most of it being (im hoping) wiser than a lot of the 18/19 Yo's that go.

Speaking only about maths, the Cambridge exams now are a fair bit easier than they were 20 years ago. (Stuff I did in the 1st year is now in the 2nd year; the questions are a bit shorter and with more hints etc.).

On the other hand, when I did the tripos, you could get a third while only answering maybe 5-10% of the exam. Which made life really difficult for the examiners trying to decide who should pass/fail, when candidates might not have been able to complete a single question on the paper. And there were some courses virtually no-one did in the exams - they were just too hard given the other options available. The new exams are clearly partially designed to fix that, which I think is no bad thing.

I've just started my final year at uni. I was on an overseas exchange last year so when I started last week I was incredibly suprised to see the idiots of the year had actually made it to the third year!

My first uni straight out of sixth form was a red brick and I failed my first year due to a combination of laziness, drugs/alcohol, girls and immaturity. However, I had the same capacity of intelligence then as I have today.

The theory of the complete muppets falling through the first year just doesnt really happen in my eyes, judging by the amount of losers who've made it through to final year on my course.

I got in a plate glass uni (York) with lower grades than I was told I needed by the uni. Don't even go til sunday then have a freshes week, so I'll have to report back with my findings in a couple of weeks.
