How do You Apply the Handbrake?

Ever since being chastised during a driving lesson for just pulling the lever and making it go click-click-click, I've for the past 10+ years always pushed the release button in before pulling.

Today I've received what I guess is a safety advisory from Honda, stating that this is the incorrect way for the new Civic as there is a risk of the latch not catching properly resulting in the vehicle rolling if it's out of gear.

So how do you do it?

Jokester

Steer left, switch right, slow to 70mph and yank it up :D

I have always just pulled it up on the ratchet and I have never ever had to change one in any of the garages I ahve worked.......
..... But did my ROSPA driving test last week and for that I was to use the pressed button method, I don't see the point tbh, yes all the lack of wear etc, but cars get driven differently and town cars will ahve more wear per mile than motorway cars.
All I say is yank away! lol.
BTW, I passed with a gold!

So, no-one's ever had the button jam and stay in? - No ratchet and no handbrake!

Or even the button being impossible to push in through a jam or blockage? - Handbrake effectively stuck on..

I've had both happen to me on different occasions and cars, but never have had or even heard of the actual ratchet failing.

It's a bloody ratchet. pull the lever, end of.

and wear on a ratchet? if you're driving a 54 Ford Pop on it's original, and the previous owner was a gorilla... well, you might have a point.
I don't know if this is irony or what but as it goes I am and as it goes he was. The handbrake is fine :D :p

Its a Ratchet does two things in life :

1. stops device disengaging.

2. makes a clicking noise.

Its not going to wear anything out quicker thats the usual BS story driving instructors tell you, the reason it clicks is so you know how far on the handbrake is, if you just yank it up you could stretch the cable.

BINGO!

Basically if in your 1ST answer, if your hand slips of the hand break or a car goes into the back of you whilst your pulling it up, the ratchet is there to stop the handbreak from fully releasing, it is always best to pull the handbreak up "without" pushing the button!

ive always taught this way from a dryving instructor!

my brother got the same letter...something about a handbrake upgrade in 08??? i dont know :p

I just pull it up till it clicks then press the button to release

usually go most of the way button down, release for last click so i know its engaged properly, even if it isnt is rolls into the next notch anyway

a socket drivers made of hardened steel though

most parts on a handbrake ratchet are made of monkey metal

well maybe thesedays theyre not
