ok, so i got the M6900. looking at the box it says its got on-the-fly DPI switching, tilt wheel functionality and 5 programable buttons.
so.......what does all this mean. i know that obvs its why people buy them coz it makes games better, but why would you change the DPI on-the-fly? and what does the tilt wheel do? also, what do people program the extra buttons to do, swap weapons, reload etc?
damn a mouse can be confusing

I generally dont bother with on the fly dpi, I just set up the mouse so the sensitivity is the way I want it, then guess what I play the game.

lol

Google DPI to find out what it really is. Basically it's like changing the sensitivity quickly. You might use it for when you are playing an FPS:

- Lowering the sensitivity when scoping in with a sniper rifle, for steadiness.
- Increasing the sensitivity when entering a vehicle with a "free-look" that is by default of a lower sensitivity e.g. a slow turning tank turret - gives you faster control.

I make a macro for my tilt wheel: ctrl+tab for right tilt, ctrl+shift+tab for left tilt... it means you can switch tabs in chrome/FF/MS Excel quickly.

what about the extra buttons? what do people normally set them for?

There was a thread about it a bit ago.

Generally people use Mouse 4 & 5 for nades and/or melee. Don't think people normally bind the tilt wheel for games.. don't think many games support it. Best to use 3rd party driver software to bind keyboard keys.

I've only been using a 'gaming' mouse for short while myself. I only use the extra buttons in FPS - Melee attack on my thumb for a quick response and lethal grenade on my other 'less easy' thumb button.

So far I have yet to use them in any other type of game...

Many people bind mouse buttons to commands in mmo games, there was some controversy a long time ago about people getting banned for this in world of warcraft, I think theres no problem anymore.

ok thanks. im used to using a 360 controller, but really want to get into FPS games now i have a pc for gaming. controller is ok for footy and racing games but want something more for FPS. picked up the M6900 as it was cheap so will give me an idea as to whether i will get on with it. if so i can look at a better one if required. can the scroll wheel be set to cycle through weapons and stuff?

wont be playing MMO games, dont have the time or patience.

Ok in that case, something like the logitech mx518 available on ocuk will set you in good stead if you fancy a cheap upgrade.

I always leave my dpi at its highest setting, 3500dpi. However some games, infuriatingly, allow their lowest mouse sensitivity option to still be too fast for high DPI mice. Rift and Borderlands being two big culprits I can think of. Both titles, for me, the lowest sensitivity is still too fast for 3500 dpi mice, so I have to swap profiles each time if I play them.

I prefer to have my extra buttons allocated for in-game stuff, not for switching DPI. I supposed I could make a keyboard shortcut. But it's still annoying; all game devs have to do is make their lowest mouse sensitivity SUPER low to allow for high DPI gamers.

BC2 does this perfectly.

Mouse wheel is normally used to scroll through weapons.

I use one mouse button for voice comms, one or two for special actions (eg melee or grenades)

I quite often use a mouse button to "switch to last weapon used" in FPS, sometimes mouse wheeling in mid battle trying to change from primary weapon to pistol for example sees me trying to bash somebody to death with a medi-kit. Using this I know I switch back and forth between primary and secondary gun

For FPS games, assuming the LMB is taken out of the equation (Fire... duh...) I'll map the RMB and both thumb buttons to either scope (never RMB for that one, always on the thumb), secondary fire, reload, melee, 'nades or Use - generally depends on what game I'm playing. The only MMO I'm playing right now is WoW and the thumb buttons are great for CD macros (popping your once-every-two-minutes cooldown, use a trinket for a complimentary buff and use whatever skill your cooldown focusses on all in one easy click) or panic buttons - why waste barspace or stretch your precious fingers when you can use an instaheal or bubble with a twitch? I used to have my paladin's bubble macro'd with hearthstone for quick world PvP escapes, then they nerfed it

anyway, the more you play on PC, the more you'll find a use for those extra buttons.

Theres a few games that have odd mouse sensitivity that I use the on the fly button to quickly raise or lower sensitivity to a set level but there is only one game that I actively switch between higher and lower dpi as I play, Red Orchestra, I find having a normal DPI for general movement and then lowering dpi for long range iron sight shots to be really useful as sometimes you need to be pixel perfect.

Aside from that depending on the game I either have the thumb buttons as stuff like reload (<<for almost every game in fact), light etc, basically any commonly used command. Same goes for the mwheel up/dwn and middle mouse button, if the game needs it or doesnt use them for something decent already.

But in games when you have 4 or so set slot weapons/useable items (TF2, BF etc) I like having Mwheel up, down and thumb buttons 1 & 2 set to their own weapon/item so I can quickly switch between items and use the keyboard really only for movement & some less commonly used actions.

Stemmed from when I changed middle mouse button to pistol in BF 1942 & BF2 so I could insta switch to it when out of ammo in my primary but that then evolved to what it is a above. Hardly ever use the mouse wheel for changing weapons/items now and actually really dont like it if im forced to use it like that.

The only game I've ever used on-the-fly adjustable DPI with is Mass Effect 2 because when the speed is right for running around it's infuriatingly slow as a cursor for planet scanning and menus for some reason.

Generally I normally stick reload and use on my thumb buttons (on the MS X8 they are both comfortable to use), and maybe some other weapon options, if they exist, or team commands or whatever on wheel tilt. Most games dont seem to recognise wheel tilt naturally, so I have to use the driver software to map tilt to a couple of keys for the game in question.

Mouse 1 = Fire
Mouse 2 = Secondary Fire/Scope/Iron Sights
Middle Button = Reload
mouse 4 = melee/torch/suit zoom (HL2)/RPG (HLDM)
mouse 5 = grenade/gauss gun (HLDM)
Wheelup = Previous Weapon (Shotgun in HLDM)
Wheeldown = Next weapon (Crossbow in HLDM)

:D
