How do you deal with cows

as title i find cows very scarey, you walk miles and miles on these footpaths enjoying the walk then the next field is full of menacing cows ,its udderly terrifying imho . are you supposed to run towards them waving your arms or just keep as far away as possible ,honestly this is a serious question as its spoiling my walks
Dunno about running Caleb just jumps up and down shouting and waving his arms up and down when facing off a feisty young bull

Did used to know someone who worked then in the past and he got them galloping round and round the field at speed as we we were trying to cross it he found it funny we found it terrifying...

Cows are naturally curious so they will often come to look you over.
They are kind of clumsy too and they don't really know their own size.

Suckler cows with calves you need to be wary of, especially if you have a dog. They can be very protective of their young.

As has been mentioned, waving your arms and shouting can be usefull. Carry a walking stick.
Running makes them think its a bit of a game and they will run after you.

Once had a rather difficult cow that hated white people, was fine with Thais/Filipinos/Arabs/Africans but would attack any white person if you got close to her.

Bulls should always be treated with respect. Once had a bull that tried to fight a tractor.
Also had a bull that was very nasty. I never entered the farm buildings without a fork to hand, a stick did not work. He nearly got me one day when I wasn't expecting it.

Came back from a weekend off to find a load of police cars in the farm yard.
It turned out the bull had gone berserk, killed 2 cows and badly injured a 3rd and the police marksman had to be called in to shoot it.

Have to drive through cow fields often, total pain they are extremely curious and will surround the car if you slow down/stop. Have to get out or bang on the car to get them to **** off.

Sheep can be even worse.

I worked on a dairy farm as a kid/teenager on weekends and holidays (80s). Cows won't hurt you, well Friesians certainly won't, they are very docile. They might take an interest in you and walk over for s sniff but that is all. Bulls on the other hand can be a different matter, though farmers tend to keep any aggressive bulls in pens and most cows, well certainly back then were impregnated by artificial insemination.

To be fair, I get anxious walking past any animal I feel can cause me harm. I once walked through a field of sheep and felt uneasy as they kept staring me down, one being particularity more verbal than the others, which I think was a ram.

WOW, a 2010 Necro Thread.

However since then in my job I have dealt with 3x cases where people got killed by a cow.
I can't remember the stats exactly, but from memory cows are actually one of the most dangerous mammals, as they've both very common, very large, people under estimate them and when they are protecting their young they can be deliberately dangerous, whilst other times they're dangerous by accident simply due to their size (especially when panicked).

People for some reason don't seem to register that a bull is just a male cow, and that in the words of Kipling (and as sung by Spaced) the female of the species is more deadly than the male ;)

Cows kill far more humans than sharks each year. On average, cows are responsible for dozens to over a hundred human deaths annually, while sharks cause only about 5–10 fatalities worldwide.

Maybe so, but most people would not walk through a field of sharks.

Maybe the ram didn't approve of a member of the public having random access to the field?

I'll get my coat.

I wish I could post the Brass Eye "Cowe gonna be chopps" Ted Maul clip, but it has a few too many swears :(
