How do you fall asleep?

The church bells are ringing here. That's a nice sound to fall asleep to. But it only lasts for a few minutes which isn't long enough.

Complete darkness (I have blackout covers on the windows) and a kind of loud steady noise.

I cant sleep in pin-drop quiet rooms. I have a noisy fan that I run at night :) And a loud ticking clock.

I guess its the same way people can fall asleep on a plane despite the fact that right outside by your window is a 92,000lbs-thrust turbofan engine howling away :D

I need a light on, and a source of light near by that doesn't require electricity. When at my mums, we have the hall light on and that light comes through the window above my bedroom door, or at my dads I have a lamp on low all night. I also like a bit of light noise, like rain or far away cars, and the room not to be too hot. Also, need two layers, a duvet and a blanket. I am very fussy :p I only sleep properly in the dark with just a quilt when I am in bed with the bouf :p

In rough order of priority:

1) Quiet. I find it almost impossible to sleep in noisy environments even if very tired. Consistent noise (e.g. a clock ticking) is just about OK but anything irregular causes me to jolt.
2) Lying down - sleeping while seated is quite tough, although it doesn't help that seated environments are often noisy too (planes, trains & automobiles)
3) Temperate i.e. not too hot

Light doesn't bother me much, can quite easily sleep with the light on if I'm tired. Not that fussed about position either, although apparently I snore more if sleeping on my back.

One thing that has changed for me is reliance on pillows, when I was young I preferred to be flatter and only used a single pillow, could easily sleep without one. Since moving in with my partner I got used to having 2 pillows and I find it weird to lie completely flat now.

In lectures:
Very easily

Most nights:
In bed, lights off, blackout blinds, no noise, no thoughts, and tired. Thoughts are the real killer, I can be absolutely exhausted and wide awake if my mind is busy on some problem or another.

After getting laid:
Nearly instantly (took me a while to stop it being involuntary as well :D )

unless i'm dead from too much activity in the day this is how i sleep.

all lights off including any silly lights from devices. black out blinds to stop any light from street. tv on low volume too low to hear words but high enough to hear, 30 minute timer with brightness and contrast almost all the way down. friends/family guy in dvd drive on auto play. and then most importanlty a large fan on low speed pointing against the wall. has to be large enough to make a decent woooooooooo noise rather then shhhhhhhhhhhhh if that makes sense.

i had seperate beds from my ex as didn't like human contact waking me up, feel with the next i'll be cuddling but then after time will go back to my own bed. i'd have my own room if it was socially accepted don't see the point in needing to keep each other up.

sleep is very important to me and i'm terrible if it's not done like this. recently stayed at fridns place with no fan and no tv took me ages to drift off and then woke up many times throughout night.

Don't spoon the wife, but I do put my leg arm underneath her pillow.

Not sure why it's just comfortable that way.

Complete darkness and complete silence is required.

Sleep snuggled under quilt cant sleep if the fiancee isnt there it just feels weird!! if i`m tired I don't mind the light on but if i`m not and just need to sleep then lights off!!

i have absolutely no problem falling asleep; with the tv on/off, lights from pc/hifi doesn't bother me; can have music playing or completely silent. only thing that'll keep me up is a subtle sound from somewhere outside my room, like a housemate coming home as i'm trying to drift off and cooking.

Not quite sure 'how' I fall asleep because I'm never actually aware of the moment I drift off, but I have a routine which helps me relax, a cool quiet dark room definitely helps, I wear ear plugs as I can be quite a light sleeper and being woken up by random noises is annoying.

Went through a stage of reading before bed as it can be a great way of winding down from all the action on TV/games/stimulation before bedtime, but usually I'm pretty shattered from all the cycling/lifting/boozing/fragging I've probably been doing that day to even pick up a book.

I've been known to fall asleep on a plane within seconds of sitting down, whilst I have also been unable to fall asleep in the most comfortable, temperate and peaceful room.

Generally it has to be a fairly big bed and ideally wrapped around a hawt 5'7" brunette too :D

I'm quite lucky that I can sleep whenever, wherever be it on the train, plane, bed doesn;t matter to me.

My wife hates the fact that I'll crawl into bed and be gone within a minute, while she's laying there trying to fall asleep.

I still prefer sleeping when it's dark and on the cool side of the pillow. I also tend to lay on my left side for a very short time, then swap to my stomach, laying with my right cheek on the pillow... and I'm out.
