Always leaves me with mixed feelings , on one hand it's impressive with the amount of effort and detail that they put into it but on the other it seems a bit weird to be that obsessed with it.

I don't think I've ever seen it done well. That's my only issue with it.

Even "the best" girl in cosplay looks cheap and thrown together.

Butter face women leverage it to get attention from basement dwellers by dressing up as video game characters.

Simple answer?

Weird, as poster above said.

Although saying thatm some of the cosplays i've seen where they have clearly put LOADS of effort into I can kind of respect the work ethic.

Cosplay is people dressing up as their favourite characters. Stuff like Final Fantasy, Marvel, Disney, Doctor Who, Batman villains, anime characters etc.

There are cosplay conventions e.g. Comic Con. Big events and they have a huge following.

In most senses, I don't think it's weird as I've known about it since pre-internet era, although the first time I saw the word "cosplay" was around 1998. That's still over 20 years ago.

The only bit that is weird though is the so-called "furry" scene. That's where people dress up as animals, and there seems to be a fetish sub-culture going on in that community.

It's not really my scene but it doesn't harm anyone and just looks like a bit of fun for fanatics to show their appreciation of a medium.

I suppose it depends on the cosplay really.

Adam Savage takes pride in extremely detailed costumes, such as his recent Mk1 Iron Man suit, or the Nasa space suits, or his Chewbacca costume etc.

I suppose at the same time, if you want to knock those who enjoy cosplay, I guess you could also say that those who wear football shirts, are all just wannabe's too
