How do you feel about cosplay?

It seems like a bit of fun, social thing for most people who do it. Never been to one but I can see why some gamers or people really into sci-fi or comic books or stuff like that would like it.

There is probably some subset of people who get a bit too into it, if you're going to the shops dressed as Gandalf or something then you're probably going a bit too far but getting dressed up for events/conventions etc.. just seems like a big fancy dress party at scale. I've certainly been to fancy dress parties, Halloween parties etc...

There seems to be another aspect too, some of the "camwhore" & "glamour model" types latched onto it early on too, back in the 00s (independent) camwhore's tended to have to be a bit-tech savvy, were very online back then and exposed to geek culture. I guess these days they're OnlyFans girls and twitch streamers etc... and becoming one is way more accessible than ever - still seems like a good angle for a hot girl to stick on some elf ears, coloured hair or whatever and grab those "beta bucks".

Belle Delphine, the bathwater girl, seems to have made millions from this and there are plenty trying to do what she has done.

Weird.

Apart from this guy. Absolute legend and was robbed of first place. RIP

That's brilliant, should have won! :D

what the hell is a 6th January capital attack? genuinely curious since it's my birthday

Some MAGA guy's got dressed up in tactical gear, one guy even decided to cosplay as some sort of Shaman type then they invaded the US Capitol Building as part of a big protest/riot. Despite them not bringing any firearms inside the building, seemingly not doing much once inside beyond the usual you'd see at any big protest getting out of hand and the FBI still having found no evidence of any plans or consipracy beyond a few of them wanting to invade the building itself some people were adamant these guys in their tactical gear etc.. were part of a "coup" attempt.

It's fans having harmless fun and enjoying themselves. I'm more concerned with people who don't like seeing people enjoying themselves so much that it irritates them enough to make them angry/annoyed by it all.

Have you considered arranging a Dogging meet at your house so you can watch people enjoying themselves?

:D

Cosplay is just a sub category of modelling these days. The professionals get paid decent money, once they've done a lot of work and practice doing it as amateurs.
As mentioned above, it's one area of crossover, mainly on porn sites where it's mostly still cheap costumes and minimal effort in order to score more attention. Few of those are actually that interested in the costumes, let alone spending hundreds of hours making accurate versions of them just for a few bucks on a camsite.
But again, the definitive division remains - If it's about the costume and building skills, it's Cosplay. If it's about the person and photos, it's modelling... and/or just social media attention-seeking.

first was aware of it from the Japanese, who did stonking quality work and seemed genuine about it. now all i see at cons is 99% females who take it as an excuse to dress like a **** and claim you can't call them out on it because they're "cosplaying". eg, wearing a black thong bikini and a darth vader helmet and claiming they're cosplaying a female variant. it's pathetic. putting an amazing amount of effort into a sexy costume/character is a totally different proposition that the majority these days don't get, or don't bother w/.

Always leaves me with mixed feelings , on one hand it's impressive with the amount of effort and detail that they put into it but on the other it seems a bit weird to be that obsessed with it.

Do you feel the same way about fancy dress parties? All full of wierdos and oddballs? Or maybe you're not part of that group and feel left out?

No-ones obsessed its just a bit of fun. Its just tabloids writing stories looking for attention. Or as they'd say these days, clickbait.

Doesn't hurt anyone and it's a fun hobby for those who do it.
I'm 100% fine with it.

I've seen a few (not taken part myself, just part of a wider convention) and basically this. Its a chance for people to be imaginative and have some fun.

Is cosplay even a thing over here? Japan and the US, sure.

I think the closest I've seen to cosplay in this country is historical re-enactments. Those people will probably hate me for lumping them in with cosplayers, as most of them consider themselves to be "hand-on historians", or something :p

It's a thing in most countries where things like comic books and superhero films etc have taken off.
The main difference between the UK and some of the other countries is that we don't have quite as many of the huge events and what we do are a little a more low key (or at least don't make the news), if you go to any Comic, Film, or Game event/convention you'll see them.
I normally go to a modelling* event in London for Wargames and there are usually at least a few cosplayers there (often including a guy in 40k power armour and storm troopers), and I've been seeing them at various events for ~30 years from my first trip to a local small comic book show with my brother in law**.

People have been going to the likes of Dr Who conventions in the UK for decades dressed as various Who's or companions but unlike say a lot of video game characters unless you are somewhat in the "know" you may not even register some of them as being in costume out of the context of the event (you can spot a Warcraft Orc or an Invader Lum from a mile off, a lot of the Whouniverse related outfits can blend in).

*As in the things you make and paint, not showing off clothes or outfits.;)

**To give an idea of how long ago that was, it was when you could go to a show and see some of the original Star Wars costumes and actors in a small university hall.

and storm troopers

Unfortunately doesn't seem anyone uploaded the latest one online which was quite big scale but there is a group which did regular Starwars cosplay events in the town I grew up in - one of the older ones: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_BcpVqSSAjo the last one I'm aware of was probably close to 100 participants - quite eerie and impressive.

EDIT: Flicking through the video - 2/3rds of those shops have closed since and either stand empty or have like a tanning place or something in them.

Just another excuse for women to go out in public dressed like whores.

I used to live in a red light district, back in the days when there weren't surveillance cameras everywhere and working the streets was more practical. Even back then, the women working the streets as prostitutes dressed more modestly than many women out on the town. For most of the year, it's too cold to work the streets dressed like that. And that's the most extreme case - not all prostitutes work the streets and the ones who don't tend to dress more conservatively than the ones who do.

There's no such thing as "dressed like whores". Unless it's a T-shirt with a price list printed on it. And I never saw that, not even when I lived in a red light district and routinely walked through it during the main prostitution working hours.

Angilon goes into overdrive in defence of the sartorial modesty of prostitutes, one never ceases to be amazed at some of the causes people take under their wings in here ;)

Maybe the (probably northern) expression "looking like right tarts" is better and less likely to bring out your deprecating censure? :)
