How do you get your books?

Charity Stalls for me. Like to look at a book before buying and not many shops here sell English books plus i dont mind giving a few euros to the local groups.

Try dropping a book in the bath and see how you get on, waterproof they aint!!!! :D:D

True, but they're under a tenner to replace if a paperback. I'm fairly certain Kindles aren't waterproof either, and cost a lot more than that. There's a whole thread elsewhere whether Kindles are better than books.

As for the original question: about 75% in bookstores, and the rest from the rain forest. I tend to buy books because I see them and fancy reading them. I consider it dishonest to then buy it elsewhere, especially if a) any saving is trivial, and b) if (as is likely) it ends up with no high street book shops. The on-line orders mostly cover books that aren't on the shop shelves.

Yes, i am well aware of that. The topic of the thread is obviously going to have bookbuyers and e-readers at opposite ends of the scale whereas i think they shouldnt be mutually exclusive.

Amazon, charity shops, stock removed from circulation in libraries and books I'm given as presents are the normal ways I get books. Very occasionally I'll buy books new from Waterstones/Ottakars/WH Smith or whoever but that's usually when I'm travelling and I see a good offer.

Bookstore for me. I love to hold a new book and the smell.....and having a shelf full of books, like old friends sitting there. No way would I get a Kindle - I spend all day looking at a screen and enjoy reading to escape that!

This.

I completely agree with this sentiment. A digital download is so impersonal, one day you'll just delete the file/upgrade. Now a good book, that can last for ever, be treasured, develop a history of it's own. Nothing could ever turn me away from the pleasure of a good book.

+1000000 billion! friends got a kindle and tried using it for 5-10 mins. it was horrible! nothings beats an old fashioned book! :)

Amazon and for uni texts Waterstones tends to be the cheapest. Really considering the iPad/Kindle approach now for my personal texts though as it's taking up a lot of shelf space.

What is the main reason for people buying a kindle. The books are not cheaper than amazon market place so is it mainly because they can bring all of their books on the go and less space being taken up?

iPad rather than kindle.

But the books generally are a smidgen cheaper(but not really here nor there). But the main points is I don't have to wait for delivery, loads of free books (for example I download the origin of species the other day, I would never of paid for that in book form) and of course connivence. Reading on a screen doesn't bother me, not on this screen anyway.

Apart from all the other stuff it does as well. No point buying two devices when there's absolutely nothing wrong with reading on it and so much more versatile.

But most people don't have use for a massive iPod ;)

Really though, nothing comes close to the Kindle when it comes to simulating paper.

Reading on an iPad gives you iStrain ;)
I get mine from the rainforest place mostly, or from Waterstones if I want something to read but not sure what.

On the Books v Kindle debate.

As long as they print paper books, I'll buy paper books. Seriously.

Two main reasons, I love being able to settle down with a new book, the smell and feel of a brand new book is a geek love of mine. Add in a few biscuits and a mug of tea. Sorted.

Second. I love having a bookshelf full of all sorts of books, always a talking point when people see some of the books you read and I always think bookshelves can look really nice.

I'm all for digital downloads, I love steam and buy pretty much all my music on iTunes (I'll always buy a CD copy if I enjoy the album though)

Five times as much for something that's worse for the purpose? No thanks.

Well you wouldnt buy an ipad just to read books but its a nice feature if you have one.

I love having a bookshelf full of books as well as shelves full of DVDs and CDs but it is great to be able to have one device and take loads of them with me. As i say it doesnt have to be an either or.

I know, i can see both sides of the argument. However i think the suggestion to 'just buy an iPad' in a debate completely about books is a bit stupid.

As above I love the feel and smell of books, collect them in my book shelves and look at them with pride, especialy when i get a whole series and they are lined up in order :)

Tend to buy from large superstores due to reasonble price and I have whats got to be one of the best 2nd hand bookstores in england not 10mins drive away from me so i'm proberly looking at 12 months reading waiting to be read due to a price drop he had not long ago.

Cant imagine reading from a kindle or ipad so it's interesting to read a few convertee posts ..

Oh, at least you gave it a serious amount of time - if you tried a book out for the first time for 5-10 minutes you wouldn't get on with it either. A Kindle is something that disappears in your hands after days, even weeks of use. Pretty soon you forget it's there and it's advantages shine through.

I took three scripts to an audition today, forty books and some music; and all that fit into the palm of my hand.

Also, to the anti-Kindle brigade. KINDLE USERS STILL HAVE NORMAL BOOKS, DUDES. There's no law to say that once you buy an e-reader you have to burn you precious Famous Five collection :D I have kept my favourite tomes and the ones that have sentimental meanings. I have kept ones that are just nice to hold. I have kept ones that I can't yet buy on the Kindle. I'm even one of those weirdos that love the smell of old books.

P.S. Glad to read people buying from charity shops - you can get some bargainous books and old ones that are out of print, and it's for a good cause. plus, there's something nice about having a cheap, old book you can throw around a bit.

And it would be but that wasnt really a suggestion.

Im going on holiday next month and i will take my Ipad with me. It will have about 100 books, 100 magazines, 30 films and a whole pile of songs on it. Now that doesnt mean i will never buy a book, magazine, cd or dvd again but its nice to take one small device and have all these options isnt it?

I have elderly-ish parents who spend a fortune on books and have a "library room" in the house. Whereas in the past they had to work out a baggage allowance for their book allocation for their two weeks in the sun they now have one wee device each that lets them take all the books they want with them. Its not a replacement for a book but its a lovely compliment for avid readers.
