How do you get your books?

Not exactly what i said but i was paraphrasing.

I'm using an iPad rather than kindle. pretty clear if you read the quote and what I post afterwards.

Nothing like what you said.

And in case that wasn't clear enough for you, this should have hit home

Apart from all the other stuff it does as well. No point buying two devices when there's absolutely nothing wrong with reading on it and so much more versatile.

I go to Waterstones, occasionally Amazon.

I would be happy to own and use a kindle or other e-reader if there was a way for me to transfer my physical collection to it without having to buy/steal digital copies.

I just like owning books too much.

Well that could imply that you were suggesting they buy an iPad because it does more than just display books, but obviously i misunderstand.

Occasionally buy books from WHSmith or Waterstone but it's usually online from the cheapest seller.

You can get some great bargins off ebay although occationally you get a used book of there that's discriped as good but turns out to be awful. That said, I've never had once that has been unreadable.

This.

I completely agree with this sentiment. A digital download is so impersonal, one day you'll just delete the file/upgrade. Now a good book, that can last for ever, be treasured, develop a history of it's own. Nothing could ever turn me away from the pleasure of a good book.

You can always tell if a book has been enjoyed, because it's usually a bit scuffed and worn, you don't get that with digital downloads. I don't quite fancy reading a long novel on a computer tablet, it just feels...awkward.

Comics, Manga or Graphic Novels are a different matter though, i could easily read them on a a tablet while lying back.

The Amazon Marketplace and Ebay are great for bargains. I was on both earlier and picked up a few of the Star Wars novels, as i wanted to get back into reading them, only a quid or two each, bargain. Sure they might be a little scuffed but then you buy a book to read it, and not to admire it's construction.

Most people said that with film and music several times over, through the different mediums. There's always a few that stick to tradition. But most people switch over at some stage.

Exactly! Ive said it a few times in this thread alone - the mediums dont have to be mutually exclusive. Its not like supporting a football team. Whats wrong with having a shelf full of books, cds and dvds and a kindle, ipad, iphone with books, cds, dvds on it?

Does anyone ever think we will start receiving codes when you buy physical books so that you can get the digital edition? In the same sort of way a lot of DVDs now come with digital versions

I think there will inevitably be a marrying up of the mediums because most people will enjoy both.

I have hundreds of books "in real life" but ive found myself buying digital versions of books i already own too.

I get them from the local library.

Have a look on Amazon to see what's out there, then use the library online ordering system and they get delivered to the library just round the corner!
