Sure many of us do this and have to travel a few hours a day to and from work on the train. So how do you make commuting more bearable?

Noise cancelling headphones?
iPad?
Book?
Sleep?
Combination of the above?

Look at pretty strangers?

I normally read which leads to sleep which then leads to me being woken up by the cleaning staff at Waterloo :D

noise cancelling earphones a must.
couple of podcasts to boot for entertainment purposes (giantbomb is especially good for long commutes as they are always over 2hrs long and pretty funny)

fully loaded mp3s of lots of music variety.

Samsung Galaxy S2.
Kindle.
Trying to think up ways to patch over plotholes in any fiction I'm writing.
Passes by quite quickly (unless someone on board has body odour *shudder*).

All of the above except I stay awake! :D

Headphone cancel out the noise, iPad for some games/music/reading books via the Kindle App.

I don't travel by train often. But I've got a trip to Edinburgh and back planned for next week. I guess ill be using a combination of mobile phone and mobile phone to get me through the journey!

Edit:

Oh and maybe a magazine.

On public transport I have to isolate myself from others, so I'm plugged into my iPod and I prefer to read something.

My other tactic is to reduce the amount of time I spend on public transport, so I cycle part of my journey. The flipside is it has made me very fit and I like the feeling of being fit :p

Depends on the journey; If it's just a nip in to the city centre or to a friends via public transport I normally listen to music/podcasts ( I have my iPhone 4 so that tends to do for shorter trips), if it's a longer journey like a train trip or flight I'd take my iPod for music/podcasts my MacBook Pro for music/podcasts/films/television show or a book.

I have a horrible habit of attracting the weird people on trains, so tend to spend most of my time telling them to politely leave me alone. I also people watch a lot.

Thankfully I commute via a van although I find traffic jams very rage inducing.

Seriously I can not understand why anybody would put themselves through trains especially the tube, you are basically stuck on a very small bus with hundreds of other miserable people, some of questionable hygiene and you do this for a couple of hours a day. Why?

To get to work so we can make a living. 20 minutes for me on train compared to an hour by road...

I actually live further away from work than last year but get to the office quicker, meaning more sleep in the mornings.
