How do you make commuting more bearable?

iPod + book normally on my commute.

If I am travelling a bit further then I may read/listen via the iPad instead (depends what I want to read and whether I have it electronically or as a physical book).

Otherwise, stare out the window / admire any pretty girls / talk to people who I see regularly on the same trams/trains ...

Listen to music, browse OcUK (as I'm doing on my commute now) and look at pretty strangers :p
I always prefer earphones which cancel some noise but I don't like things that cancel all the noise, If you know what I mean.

Morning:
In-ear headphones
Trance
Digital comics

Evening:
In-ear headphones
TV shows (just finished the most recent series of Chuck)
Trance + games for the final 15 minutes

I used to have a 40 min train journey, but started using the car, it costs a bit more but commuters drive me nuts, especially when you get a bunch of women loudly talking shop at 7am, with constant bleeding phones and unnecessarily loud conversations, used to drive me nuts. I don't care about your new flat, or where you ate going for the weekend! I once actually shouted down some idiot playing his music on his phone, I thought it was a chav but as I approached, mouthing off, I quickly realised he was a petrified student type... that said, my blood was boiling by that point and I think I cam across like a mad man.

I found I could cope by sticking my phones on and forum whoring to pass the time, but I would honestly rather sit in traffic, and cope with the extra expenses than sit on a train.

I've almost always got some music on when I'm travelling unless it's with someone I know and usually I'll also be reading a book - it's quite a good excuse to read books that I otherwise might not get round to, I've got to be on the train anyway so I might as well do something useful with it.
