To be fair that is a French word, i don't think you can really use it as an example in this case

Can't be asking the french, i mean Oui is pronounced as wee so they're the last I'd lot i'd be looking at on how to pronounce words .

It is of French origin....not unlike much of our language. The French pronounce it slightly different, truncating the final vowel.

I always pronounced it "Spee", but then I probably pronounce half the names in here wrong.

How things are pronounced and how people pronounce their family names are completely different. If a family chooses to say it differently, then that's how it will become.

Yes because they speak Afrikaans, a daughter language of Dutch, the most closely related to English of all major modern languages.

I always said "spee" for that reason

I have always read it as Spy, I just never knew what he intended it to be read as.
