How do you pull your handbrake up?

Button in. Pull up. If I'm on a hill I'll rock in my seat to see if there's movement and them pull extra clicks until the car doesn't move.

I have an irrational hated of cars with buttons instead of a proper handbrake. Almost a deal breaker if I was looking to buy a car. Is it just me?

For me, hold the button in whilst applying the handbrake.
Have to say that I love the comments about "wearing out the ratchet". In 28 years of driving, I've never ever heard of one failing.
For all that, I just find the sound of the ratchet really really grating.

When I was learning and in my first car, I just pulled the lever but I hate the sound of the ratchet in the VX so always push the button.

I understand there is a risk of the handbrake slipping off if you press the button and lift.

Isn't the ratchet built stronger than the release mechanism? so it would be more wearing to actually use the button when putting it on? (question not statement)

I agree with this totally - it's weird how we both press the button in as well, when I started driving 21 years ago it was rammed into your head that you would wear out the ratchet and I guess old habits die hard. It was only when I thought about it and started working on my own cars that I realised how stupid this myth was.

Pull it up without pushing the button in. The sound is reassuring. Then use both hands to get an extra click out of it*.

* Not really

I've only had one ratchet fail due to wear and it's on a handbrake that was made in 1927.

To answer the question: I lean out the side of the car and pull the lever towards me. I would say lean out the side window, but there aren't any. Soon I will have a conventional handbrake on the floor and side windows and stuff. Luxury travel is entering my life.

Wearing out the ratchet. Right....

Newsflash, you have more chance of damaging your handbrake system by over extending the handbrake cables by not knowing how far you've pulled the handbrake on....

Exactly. The "extra click" that many people are talking about is just putting extra strain on the cable. If you are worried about it rolling down a hill just leave it in gear.
