How do you solve the Chair vs Carpet problem?

I've got a pro computer chair with wheels and it destroyed the carpet here. Ended up with a lame plastic layer under it.

Moving soon and want to protect my new carpet, want rid of the plastic thing - so.. what do you do?

You either get a chair without wheels, or remove / cover the carpet

I had a carpet protector, complete waste of time, in the end I removed the carpet and put down laminate.

Years ago I remember when we had new carpets fitted in our old house, we had an off-cut of carpet made into a rug for the study. So it was the same colour but the carpet below was protected All that was done was it had the same kind of edging that the samples of carpet usually have in shops.
