Well everyone has different solutions. But firewalls can do things like rate limiting the interface and look for Resource starvation attacks (i.e. the use of SYN/FYN waits).
You will also be pleased to know many ISP's also offer DDOS mitigation if your a big enough customer! BT certainly offer it.
Yeah I don't think DDOS mitigation will be particularly easy, the DDOSes that have occured hit with 8-12GB of data each second from international sources. Wellp. Unless someone has a miracle, I think I'll just leave it be.
