How do you think this forum would change if usernames were not displayed?

Imagine that the margin to the left of this post was blocked or removed entirely. How do you think it would effect how people would react to your posts, or how you'd react to others, if you literally just had the content within to judge on?

I think a lot of what transpires here, and on fora in general (this obviously isn't the one I frequent), does depend on the speaker for at least some element of context, and quite largely in some cases.

I would welcome an experiment like this here, just to see how for a short period of time the forum becoming a place of transaction purely for ideas would effect what was said and the flow of threads.

What do you think might happen?

It'd be worse I reckon.

Though one positive which I'm not really sure on how to phrase... currently there's a fair bit of "That person is being a ****, oh wait. They're a mod. I'll smile sweetly instead." whereas if usernames were removed and mods were just one of the community they'd be told "You're an ****" when they were being an ****. People wouldn't know or care that they're a mod. Tell it how it is . There'd be no distinction between kwerk and the mods. If they're a **** they're a ****, whoever they are.

Sounds like a good idea for the General Hardware section. Every "spec me" thread ends up with stulid's build being chosen.. I cba trying to pimp on his patch anymore.

advice would be worse, you'd have no idea if the guy is a well respected poster in that specific hardware section and knows what he's talking about or just some retard.

It would be rubbish. How could you have a discussion. You wouldn't know who's giving what opinion and you would have no way to follow it over the next 80pages.

Somehow I think i would still recognise certain peoples posts.

As long as the ignore list was still a feature I think I could tolerate it but knowing that you are talking with the same person about things is fairly essential for a discussion board.

The problem is that Postcount != Better advice..

This. And I look at a a small majority of posters who have been active from around '05 and have full confidence that there information is sound, I know this isn't exactly what the thread is about but it is a big contribution to that little left section of "personality".
IMO :D

It might not matter for a few people with a distinctive posting style as there's a fair number I'd probably recognise (for good or bad reasons) irrespective of names/signatures/postcount/whatever but probably the vast majority of people wouldn't stand out much in that regard so it would make the forums a whole lot less interesting.

Although in some ways it would be interesting to see how people would react without the preconceptions about what certain posters are like.

I could have a long conversation with myself and nobody would know.

Good lord no. If I adjudge they are are of sound mind from other posts then yes they are ok but treat every poster and every forum as you would the road and every other driver. They are all morons unless they prove otherwise. Duration of driving/posting is in no way indicative of intelligence or sound reasoning or judgement just as quantity of posts isn't.

All wise old men are old and wise. Not all old men however are wise and not all wise men are old.

That is of course my opinion :p
