How do you type?

Most of my typing is done using the middle finger of my right hand, and the first finger of my left.

other functions such as shift (middle left) use other fingers.

(funnily enough, I cannot think off hand just what I use my other fingers for, I will try to remember when I next do it)

every now and again I throw out a wild card and use a pinky or something. (right pinky is right track ball button)

How do you type?

i use all fingers. I reverse touch type. I stare at the keyboard and type and realise when I've made a mistake before looking at the screen.

I look at the screen and only realise that I have made a mistake after the spell check has highlighted it. :D

Unfortunately, being severely dyslexic and therefore functionally illiterate, Spell-check often corrects my errors into words that, while being technically correct, are not necessarily what I want to say.

I have to do an awful lot of proofreading on posts and I still frequently get it wrong! :(

I type mainly with my index fingers, I've attempted to learn how to touch type multiple times but I always get bored half way through.

I've learned full touch typing in the past, and stuck with it for some time, but I've eventually tended to revert to three fingers.

As for speed and where I look, I look at the cursor as the letters are appearing, and go as fast as possible. This means I have to skip back to correct errors, but I prefer this to slower paced typing, as if I type quickly I can sort of "think out loud", then the error corrections give me reason to pause and - more often than not - rephrase things.

I use most fingers and look at the screen as I type. I make mistakes but it's all a learning curve.

I don't always use my thumbs or little fingers on both hands though. Something I need to work on.

Like this! :p

I use as many fingers as possible and go as fast as I can. I try to look at the keyboard as little as possible but sometimes my fingers just fail me and no amount of retyping helps.

I can touch type reasonably well although my technique probably leaves plenty be desired and my words-per-minute isn't anything special. Both are good 'enough' in that I can get whatever it is in my head out via the keyboard at a satisfactory speed and don't tend to make too many mistakes, although I usually end up going back and rewording or rephrasing things rather than being a one-take-Jake.

Something close to touch typing, although I've picked up far too many bad habits over the years to call it touch typing.

I touch type fairly well but my 68 year old mother puts me to shame. She cut her teeth on mechanical typewriters for the GPO and then MOD... And has rarely used a computer at all

I hadn't really thought about it, so I am typing this just to see which fingers I use.

I'm a little bit surprised at the result. I use four fingers, but not the four that I assumed I used. On my right hand, I use the middle finger and index finger. On my left hand, I use the index finger and ring finger. I'm not using my left middle finger for typing at all. Nor am I using my right thumb for space, which I idly assumed I was doing.

I can believe it, back when you had to manually correct everything, or even start from scratch if you made a mistake you tended to get very good if you wanted to stay in the job.

We're getting worse at typing over time because most people for the last couple of decades have learned on electronic typewriters at the minimum if not computers, and mistakes are so easily corrected we don't worry about making them in the first place.
I believe there are still quite a few writers who use traditional typewriters for the first drafts of some work simply because the need to take it slow and avoid mistakes makes them think about it more.

I touch type badly.

My favourite key's the backspace, and despite at times making a concerted effort to improve, I rarely seem to type much faster than 50 words per minute.
