How do you type?

I use all 10 fingers, but do not actually touch type and find that most typing is done using the first and second fingers on each hand, with the pinkies for things like shift.

For many years I typed using no more than three fingers from each hand with eyes moving rapidly between keyboard and screen.

A couple of years ago I decided to learn to touch type. I found it very difficult and progress was slow, which could be related to my age (I'm in my 70s) and having to overcome 40 odd years of muscle memory. I persevered and am now comfortable touch typing and enjoying the benefits.

The effort has been worth it.

Pretty good at typing, I wouldn't call it proper touch typing but I use most of my fingers and don't need to look at the keyboard all that often.

On the pc its touch typing whilst blankly staring at the keyboard, with occasional bouts of actual proper touch typing.

On the tablet its twin finger stabbing for when its sitting on a table, or one handed two finger stabbing when holding it with the other.

On the phone its the landscape twin thumb method or a ton of spelling mistakes.

Typing is like making love to a beautiful woman, take your time and keep your fingers near the nipples.

All fingers, touch typing, ~90wpm in online tests. Make a few mistakes along the way, but nothing too bad

I just mash my face into the keyboard. It works really well for almost two full sentences but after that fnhblies\fdccesf cesf jhnbszbscv gv vhhfukfu vfc xse245vbb 7ffses jbh, ,uh .,huiltfrd

I use all of my fingers when typing and never look at the keyboard. I don't use the standard touch typing as a lot of my work involves symbols (I'm a programmer) which touch typing really isn't great for.

I do however find when I'm typing standard english, I use the fingers on the left much more than those on the right, I think that's because a couple of fingers on the right hand area always hovering over the symbol keys.

Both index finger and the middle finger on my right hand for anything beyond the Y key. Bit weird I know!
I used to play a typing game called 'Flying Fingers' - sounds rude but basically it taught tough typing quite well. This was back in maybe 2005?

I would have thought a proper touch typist would be faster than that.

I can touch type but I don't use the "proper" technique but I still manage to hit about 50 - 55 wpm.

I taught myself how to type by playing EverQuest when I was a teenager. Having to play a game and type messages to other people in real time soon made you stop looking at the keyboard and concentrate on the game because if you looked at the keyboard you'd end up dying pretty fast :).

80 wpm is RSA level III which would legal secretary / medical secretary territory. However, 55 wpm is RSA level II which is still acceptable when applying for most admin jobs.
