How exactly do you stop a bad day from getting worse?

It's pretty tough isn't it, you inevitably get irritable and then everyone else notices and normally their response is irritation (especially if it happens frequently) and you get a lovely downward spiral.

I try to use pc games, good films, talking to my wife, watching a comedy, keeping a funny book at hand (i.e. Mighty Book of Boosh, The World of Karl Pilkington), music, funny podcasts (Joe Rogan, Bill Burr, Car Pool).

It's easy, completely remove yourself from the scenario which is causing the day to go badly. If this means going home and watching TV, sitting in a cafe or whatever for an hour, just do it. I guarentee you will feel better when you are done and won't eve understand why anything was wrong in the first place.

I've always wondered why people don't do this more often, you get it a lot in competitive games, people ask "how do I deal with getting angry after losing?", solution is simple, stop playing for 10 minutes and do someone completely unrelated.

Chances are things aren't nearly half as bad as you think, your body has just convinced you otherwise, it's mostly biology that is ruining your day,

As a deep-rooted pessimist, the absolute belief that I'm going to have an even worse day tomorrow makes the 'Bad' of here and now become strangely comforting.
