Would this work for humans? If we relax our muscles as we fall do we do less damage?

In principle yes but humans aren't so good at falling and aren't as robust.
But in car crashes and such like it is a lot better to be relaxed and not have your muscles fix your body rigidly. A fried was in a car crash and he straitened his legs out so his knees locked and pressed his feet against the foot well and locked his arms out pressed against the dashboard. The force when straight through his legs and arms into his back and neck crushing vertebrae and at the same destroying his main joints.
