How far does everyone commute to work?

Actually, according to Google it was 11.4 miles, using my super secret unclassified road route. Why does everyone just put up with sitting on the motorways and A roads in traffic?

It took me 30 minutes on Google earth then 2 trips experimenting to perfect the way home.

Anyone commuting less than 10 miles in a car, take the bike you lazy individuals! Should only take half an hour to cycle ten miles.

Cons: can take longer, you can get drenched / sweaty / run over by a lorry.

Benefits: health and fitness, fresh air exposure, feel better, reduce petrol fumes entering the environment thereby improving Britain's air quality, save a fortune on petrol, beat the traffic especially in cities, arrive at work feeling more chilled, refreshed and energised to face the day ahead!

I think it depends how long it takes rather that how far you travel each day.

I travel 9 miles every day each way and it takes about 30-40 minutes on a motorbike, by car it used to take between 35-60 minutes. South London area with a lot of traffic and traffic lights.

I used to commute less than 10 miles. But carrying my laptop and, gym kit, as well as my suit in a bag (with no ironing board at work) is a PITA - furthermore, I'd have to leave home considerably earlier to have to my desk at a decent time. And cycling home from where I used to work when you've had a rubbish day is not my idea of fun.

Completely agree about the health and fitness, couldn't give a fig about the environment benefits, and despite being London I could still get home quicker by car than by bike. :)

The time of day I used to travel getting to and from work took 20 mins each way. Cycling would take 40 minimum, and 1hr on the way back (uphill all the way). So that would add 1hr to my day just for commuting - no thanks!

I use a pannier rack and bags to carry my gym kit, laptop and waterproofs etc. I wear my suit jacket so it doesn't get creased.

That's strange, since you and your family are the ones breathing the horrid black-bogey inducing air :p. I'm not some eco-hippy, I'd just like to breathe cleaner air.

You sure? You actually tried it? According to Citroen, who have no interest in persuading people not to drive, bikes can travel almost twice as fast on average as a car in London rush hour traffic.

40 minutes to cycle less than 10 miles downhill? Not for someone with your fitness surely.

All that said, I would never enforce my (new) point of view on people, and my lazy comment was tongue in cheek, since I know very well that busting your balls at work all day yet driving only 2 miles does not make you lazy ;).

3 miles each way for me, either by car or bike depending on the weather and what I'll be doing at work. I used to do 20 miles each way by car and it's so much nicer having such a short commute now.

hehe - I always find conversations with you fun. :)

I don't drive in central London but the outskirts so maybe it's a little different. Now though I don't have my "local" commute anymore.

I honestly have "raced" a colleague who lives near me, home, and whilst a good and keen cyclist (he also stops at red lights like they should) I got home more than 30 mins before him, not sweating, sat down with a cup of tea perfectly relaxed. :) Sure, not a big difference, but over a week that's 2.5hrs - time I could be at the gym, or cooking! ;)

I used to work silly hours so I used to drive home, and on the way stop at the gym, kill myself there, and then somehow manage to drive home! I live on top of a hill, and it is up and down all the way to work - so it's not really "all downhill" but I get your point.

I guess if at the time I was working less hours, didn't care about the gym so much, had the time for a shower at work (I couldn't wear my suit cycling - I sweat easily!) then I'd consider it. It's just a ball ache getting changed showered and everything at work when you've done it at home!

I used to use my motorbike to commute - it's similar, much faster than the car (by 10 mins at least) but, the pain of having to get dressed / undressed just isn't for me.

If I lived on a flat bit of London where the chances of pouring with sweat were slim then I'd reconsider. I like being in my car, I can relax, listen to music, enjoy the sunshine, look at the pretty girls walking by and really not get too upset at life. :)

7.3 miles as the crow flies.
9 miles by car (not gonna happen in London).
15 miles by tube, takes 1 hour.

34 miles per day if its just me travelling, 41 if i pick a girl i work with up and drop her off.

Glad i have a nice reliable diesel to get me there and back. :D

15 Miles there, 15 back....

A1 drivers are an utter nightmare...I undertake regularly when in a rush as they simply refuse to move over to the left hand lane!
