How far would you travel each day for work before relocating?

I just worked out that I spend roughly 19 days a year sitting on transport.

By that I mean I you sat on the train for (24 hours) for 19 days .....that is depressing.

Worst thing is that I have been doing this for 5 years, that is just short of 100 days on a train.

Mosts people work ~228 days a year so that only works out at 2hrs a day or 1hr each way :) Of course, it depends how much travelling you have to do at either end.

As I said before, sitting on a train is only "wasting" time if you let it.

On another thread in a subforum there's a question regarding "how do you guys find the time to keep up to date with software development shnizz?"

There's your answer, I find the time on the train. Before smartphones, I would be reading text books and/or magazines.

Even if the initial sums were correct, that's 19 days "training/self-improvement" I get a year, for "free". And that's 100 days of self-improvement in 5 years. You could probably learn a foreign language in the same time-span.

:)

In descending order of importance: I'm lazy, I sometimes carry heavy stuff to and from work, I don't own a bike, my commute is mostly spent avoiding running over cyclists.

Edit: plus I'm spending a fortune on insurance, the least I can do is make a vague attempt at crashing it to get my money's worth.

Wow... No wonder the environment is ****** and so many people in this country are overweight.:(

My house to work is about 15 minutes by car and ~30 by bicycle.

From work to my GFs in Glasgow is about 30-40 minutes by car, about the same by bicycle for some reason. Then home from there is 30 minutes by car or 45 minute cycle.

Any more than that I'd rather not do it really.

Correct, although I have to sit/stand around waiting for connections as it is all public transport which works out at another 15 - 40 minutes a day.

I don't mind public transport just as long as I have my headphones with me. It gives me the option to close my eyes if I am tired or I can read/watch a tv show or movie if I feel like it.

It is worth pointing out that it is far from stressful travelling in each day.

I am currently looking at changing jobs and I have to say shortening my journey is weighing heavily on the decision factor. I would have to be payed at least double to lengthen my journey time.

If you are actually sat down on a train (as opposed to standing like a sardine) for an hour, then I can see the logic on this. For most of my friends though, their 1 hour commute will be made up of a short walk, followed by getting on a train, stand for 20 minutes, get off the train, walk to another platform, wait 5 minutes to get on to a tube, stand for 10-15 minutes, get off the tube, walk to their place of work.

Unless the job was absolutely fantastic and i loved it, I wouldn't relocate, it'd get a different job.
Otherwise probably an hour.

It depends on:
1) Journey time
2) Price

The actual distance is irrelevant, because the transport across London varies immensely (add traffic in to that).

We relocated the office back in March to be more central (in London), but it's taking me an additional 15 - 30 minutes to get into work every day, where as it was just shy of an hour door-to-door before.
The journey itself is much worse too. Before I would just have one train and a walk, now I have a train, two tubes and a shorter walk.

A 90 minute journey where I have a seat (or lap space), a table and some sort of internet connectivity would be infinitely better than the journey I do at the moment.

Cost is an issue but I would be hard pressed to find the right combination of housing, transport cost and income elsewhere in the country, so I just have to suck it up. I would not want to travel more than I am at the moment (time wise) and would definitely prefer only one mode of transport.

I travel 38 miles each way to work. Its about my limit and ideally I dont like to work more than 30 mins away from home. I'm not in a position to relocate because A) I like where I live and all mine and my wifes friends are in the area, and B) the office is in Surrey and the surrounding areas are generally out of my price range; so I'll pay the extra in fuel and commute every day.

I drive 80 miles each way to work, about 1h20. To start off it was a killer, but not it doesn't really bother me.
I think if I stopped doing it I'd realise how crazy it was.

The time does not bother me, it's the cost of the journey that does.

See, I'm the other way. Even with the offer of fully expensable travel I have turned down offers with large commutes.

I've done a 35 mile drive across B roads that took over an hour for over 2 years, and at another job a 45 mile run up a dual carriageway plus fighting into the centre of Exeter which also took over an hour for about 18 months.

An hour is about my limit, although having spent 2 years with an 18 minute commute even that is pushing it now.

Won't even blink at anything up to an hour (it was how long it took me to get to school, so I'm used to it).

I'd probably start to consider it at 2 hours.

Anything in between would be fine so long as the job was good.

I've generally been lucky, within about 30 mins walk of my workplace everywhere I've lived in Sheffield. I'd think about an hour by whatever means would be roughly my max.
