How fast do you go on the motorway?

Hi, what speed do you usually average at on a clear motorway? I ask because I came across a speed camera setup on a Motorway bridge near Barnsley on the M1 on saturday.

It was parked at the far side of the bridge as I approached, and so it was practically invisible ( I look out for white vans and police cars on bridges so I caught it early ). Anyway, as I got closer, I could see before I passed under the bridge through the railings that there were 2 guys with tripods looking down onto the motorway, presumable watching the other direction of traffic, but probably the direction I was going in to.

I think I was doing about 75 - 79 when I spotted the van, although as I said the guys were facing the other direction. As well as this I was in the inside lane and I think they were only looking at the centre lane.

This is the first time I've seen this sort of setup on a motorway bridge, and unless I was really alert and looking for it, I would not have seen it.

There was the usual panic breaking as other people noticed approaching the bridge. This leads me to the question, how fast do you usually go on the motorway?

This incident has shook me a little, so I'm sticking to 70 now, although the M1 has some large hills in this area, so unless you are concentrating on the speedo, you just find yourself matching the speed of the car in front (within reason)

Any faster than about 75 in my car and your ears bleed. That is of course if the whole thing hasn't disintegrated and you're not rolling about in the hard shoulder holding a steering wheel.

Have you been stealing my Toyota without asking again?!?!?! ;)

Normally stick the cruise on 75-80ish if it's fairly clear. That means if I do spot a scamera, I can just dab the clutch to turn it off & coast down to 70 without too much drama.

PMSL :D

Depends on the distance for me and if I'm in a rush. If its a cross country journey then I will probably sit at 65 - 70 and get (45mpg) but if its a 1 junction journey then probably 75

Usually around the 70 mark, depending on conditions. If its quiet, sometimes push it to about 80. Im in no position to hammer ir, Im happy to just poodle along :D

One More Solo - awesome beautiful sig, I have that picture as my wallpaper image :D

EDIT: Your sig changed, but I meant the pic with Kelly lying sideways with a look about her that makes me melt :D

Im expecting to get slated by some on here, but I will be honest...

Daytime, 80/90 is top whack - a lot less around traffic.

Nightime/early mornings, empty road, good conditions triple figures doesnt feel insane.

70mph or so normally, im all for saving petrol by not ragging it down the motorway, couldnt stick to the perfect speed of 56mph tho.

80 on the speedo, so 78 actual.

Depends, if I'm feeling very relaxed I'll sit at 70 on the speedo, so 69.

65-70 is I just want to 'cruise' but if I am overtaking I will go up to 85-90 as I like to overtake properly and not sit there doing about 72 and taking forever to overtake.

~60-65 is probably what i normally go at when im in the dark, and usually 70 in the day. Only been driving 2 weeks so still getting used to sitting on a dual carriageway for longer than 10 minutes at a time :p

Not been on any major motorways yet.

75-80 until my gf shouts at me :(, then i'll drop down to 70 then creep back up, then explain that indicated 75 = ~72 actual

Purely for fuel economy and general relaxation, 70-75. I do give it a blast from time to time though ;)

I seem more comfortable cruising at 85mph on the bike for some reason - besides I'm hardly past 6k RPM at that speed :p

My girlfriend was actually very calm during a three figure sprint round the M25 with three other Lotii recently. She said it was "quite exciting" when we reached our destination.

Don't like driving that fast with anyone else in the car though.
