How fast DO you read?

812 wpm with 86% comprehension.

720 wpm for 100% comprehension.

I think with less numbers and symbols my speed and probably comprehension would be higher. On the flip side if there are a lot of numbers my speed and comprehension decreases significantly.

It's pretty obvious. I even make the distinction between 'do' and 'can' in the OP. I wanted people to do the test honestly, as they would normally read, not attempt to read faster than they've ever read before as it defeats the purpose of doing the test. For instance I 'could' read at over 400 words per minute, but in reality I don't.

I see. That doesn't come across to others clearly however.

"How fast do you ACTUALLY read?" would have made more sense.

Bringing this back from the dead because having just finished Clash of Kings after starting it about 2 months ago and with about 40 hours worth of reading I've become annoyed by some of the claims mentioned in this thread.

When I read I sub-vocalise. I enjoy sub-vocalisation, especially when a characters are conversing or sub-vocalising their own thoughts. In fact I can't image reading a novel any other way. Annoyingly though this sub-vocalisation limits the speed at which I can read to the speed I can talk.

I ask the speed-readers a question or two. When did you learn to read without sub-vocalisation? Is it something that occurred naturally with practise, or something you had to actively learn?

Genuine lol at some of these answers. As much as I might be a tard, I sincerely doubt that some of you can read comprehensively at three times the pace of myself!

252 for me.

Are you reading aloud in your head (sub-vocalizing)?

So this is how you read a novel for example? Can you read without sub-vocalising for things where 100% comprehension isn't necessary?

No, I wouldn't read it like that for a novel, but I wouldn't expect to be able to recall it particularly word for word either.

I usually absorb sentences as a whole, which allows me to read, so I consider, phenomenally fast, hence my surprise at some of the comments in this thread. However when I'm reading something serious you really have to concentrate as tiny variations in sentence structure can have massive implications. I guess it's two different types of reading. Even then if I was reading a contract I'd read it a lot slower than I did for that test.

Interesting site and tests thank you very much. All my life I have subvocalised the words read in my mind as I read them, usually I am a slow reader at this. However I trained to read quicker and subvocalise words quicker.

I thought what I was doing was the normal, for everyone, I hadn't even thought about other methods of reading and was always puzzled how some people could read so quickly.

Will definitely look into other methods and try them out.

270 and 70 something % comprehension. I read at a comfortable pace to help take it in, I could skim read it much faster but it wouldn't really register.

Also I think if I had done this test a week ago it would have been a bit lower, I've read lots over the last week as I was on holiday :p
