How Good is an iMac?

I'm wanting to upgrade my PC as I've had it for 5 years now and it's held out really well. But it's getting old now so I'd like a change.

I've been to the Apple Shops and played around with the Mac's but never really asked in detail what they're good for.

I'd like to play Games odd Css/WoW on High but not like at 1028202x21921219 resolutions.

Video/Photo Editing I'd also like todo without the slowdowns I get on this computer. I use Photoshop a lot btw.

Thanks for any input.

iMacs - Justin and I will both agree that they're fantastic. Nice and quick, very nice design and does exactly what it says on the tin. If WoW and CSS are available for Mac then you'd have no problems with spec, if you're using Windows versions then obviously you'd have to go down the Windows route - BootCamp is best for games as it's as if the game is running on a Windows computer and not an emulator.
My iMac has no troubles at all with Photoshop, video and photo editing has no problems :)

Thank you Maccy. Now it's just deciding which screen would be Ideal for me, 20" or 24". Seen both in person and 24" just looks huge.

Yeh the 20" isn't as good quality.
The 24" looks huge at first, you get used to it very quickly, it looks normal to me now. It's great for watching movies, playing games, having multiple windows open etc. It's better for running Logic/Pro Tools for me too as I can fit more onto the screen.

Bit random! Does everyone else disagree then!?

Well Justin is someone who most people know of in the Apple area.

But yes i'd agree, i opted for the 20" model, due to space, don't regret it at all, still an awesome piece of kit. In the future i might get a 24" model, just purely for the fact that....well dunno, i want it :D.

Either way, both are good pieces of kit, the screen isn't as good as the 24" model, but its definitely usable.

For example, mine is the 2.66ghz model, and i use it for Lightroom, iMovie, CS3, Aperture 2 and a bit of gaming.

Doesn't slow down at all really.

Games i have tried are COD4, COD2, MoH:AA and they've all been fine, on high settings. This is with 'just' the 2600. As long as you dont obviously have resolution of like 1680x1050 and all high you should be fine in most games apart from the highest ones, Crysis etc.

I also have a partition for Windows XP (Games), and it runs amazingly quick.

The iMacs look brilliant and are a really nice, all-in-one-PC. But don't forget for one moment; it is a compromised piece of equipment, uses comparatively old components and comes with a relatively hefty price tag. You cannot upgrade your own components, you could get a better screen and hardware for the money, but of course you lose the nice all-in-oneness.

Having said that, the HP and Dell all-in-ones look pretty snazzy; I wonder how the costs compare.

Do you have an iMac?

Now this is a better piece of kit, but comes with the same compromises; cannot upgrade it, lacking graphics processor (for the latest games). Having said that, the hardware it does come with is better than the iMac, and of course it has a touch screen with some pretty decent UI software.

You buy a mac mostly for the OS, which is far superior to Windows (having never used a Mac previously).

Anti-apple? Get out of this thread. Go on, you heard.

To the earlier comment - Justin was the only Apple related member that quickly came to mind!

Also, no hotlinking.

For someone that doesn't like Macs you spend an awful lot of time in here.

I mean... it's fine that you don't like them, and most of what you say has some merit (you're not a slavering imbecile like a lot of people turn into when the subject of Macs comes up), but it just seems a bit masochistic!
