I have been out of the loop for some time and was wondering how good my current cpu is #

Q9650 @ 3.6ghz will do 3.8ghz

how much faster are the new i5 / i7 cpus?

interesting the only real big benefit is video encoding then and If I am doing any of that I don't care if it takes 2 mins or 10 really.

cool.

If it is not then I would consider i5, Nothing else.

Unless, like me, you are waiting to see how AMD upset the apple cart with BD.
Maybe people won't be rolling their eyes when AMD release a comparable chip for less cash. :D
I'll save my upgrade cash until then anyway and hope AMD make me a better offer. If not I'll go i5 but why would anyone except an Intel fanboy go i5 right now until they have seen the imminent other options?

I've currently got a 2500k and running it at 4.5GHZ... you REALLY don't need any more than that for at least three years unless you do lots of video rendering and stuff.

I would say 3.8GHZ is enough for any gaming needs. If you're going to upgrade it, then I would suggest upgrading it when you max it out, the new AMD chips look promising if you can wait.

Plus when the BD comes out intel is bound to start droppin the price of sandybridge as an undermine tactic. So win win :)

Have been wondering the same about mine - Q9550 @ 4Ghz. For the time being I think we are fine. I only game anyway and I have not seen many games use 100% of all 4 cores. Sometime in the next couple of years I will probably pick up one of the overclocked bundles from OcUK.

You wion't see much difference going from the cpu you have to a new socket unless you do lots of video encoding. If gaming is your bag then stick with what you have.

Here is the thing tho!

You can sell a q9650 for what an 2500k would cost
The ddr2 in your machine would pay for new ddr3 as ddr3 is cheaper( an allow you to add another 8gb later on)
The only real outlay would be the motherboard, after selling the board you would need to fund a bit towards a p67 motherboard but not much, something like a p5q deluxe will go for around the £70 mark so all in your looking at about £70 to upgrade. all in all you would would have a faster pc for not much outlay. I have seen quite a few ppl on the members market selling the q9650's I'm guessing they worked out as well its a cheap upgrade. I know I did :D

Just feels strange having hardware that doesn't need to be upgraded anymore? I know it is only because we haven't had a new gen of consoles for a while, but the upgrade in my sig followed on from a necessary upgrade almost every year, just to keep up with games. Was half expecting Shogun 2 to make me upgrade, but not even that did it. I still have a little room for OCing in my CPU too, so still has a little more to give.

Yeah pretty much, a lot of game developers optimise their games for consoles (xbox 360, PS3 & Wii) and then port them to the PC which means the engines and graphics in games aren't evolving at the rate they were before.

Which is both good and bad in my opinion. On one hand it means you don't have to keep upgrading your CPU & GPU every year or so and save a lot of money. But on the other hand it means we're not seeing great improvements in game graphics and engines every year.

But I believe BC3 is one of the few games that will be specifically optimised to make the most out of computer hardware so that should be interesting to see.

If only they could work out a middle ground!

Going from a QX9650 @4.2 to a 2600k @4.8 game wise didn't notice much difference on the handful of games I play as I already had high fps on them, it probably was faster but its not like I was running fraps to be able to tell. One game I did notice a big jump in though was dirt 2 when you do the bench mark test, it was about 65fps before and now reads 100fps

It's not that you need to upgrade ur pc coz its still good, but for the sake of £70 you get a lot of upgrade for the money, plus its alway nice to have new toys to play with and it does somewhat more future proof your pc as well. With the new motherboard you have the choice of sli or crossfire if that's ur bag. Also later on I read on here there will be a six core sandybridge so it has a bit more life left in it too.
