Hi,

Found out whats wrong with the banging I am getting in my Focus. It is the front left spring that has snapped. Now how hard is it to change a spring? Should have access to a spring compressor.

Take care with the compressor thingys. Changed the shocks and springs a few times on my GTIR.

Make sure the compressors have a very good purchase on the spring and wind them equally at a time.

Was looking at a Sealey spring compressor like this.

Hmm I'll have to look in my Haynes. Anyone have a rough idea how much a garage will charge?

garage you'd be looking at prolly an hours labour, so whatever their rate for that would be

Easy peasy job. Cheapo spring compressors will do the job as you'll probably never use them again, I haven't.

Don't forget to put the old spring to some use, make a mental pogostick with it or something.

Mine are just two long threads with hooks on each end. Put these either side of the spring and wind the hooks down.

Only a few quid.

Its not a particularly hard job, just be careful when compressing/with the compressed spring. Undoing the strut top nut can be a pain sometimes, its often easier using a swan neck spanner (and something to hold the top of the thread to stop it turning) or electric/air impact wrench if you have one handy.
Some coil springs require some serious compressing, I done a vectras which required 2 sets of compressors to get it compressed enough to get the strut top back on.

Decided to go garage. Only £20 more to use them. Especially when I don't have that much time I don't mind spending the extra. If I had more time I'd have definitly done it.
