How Indie Are You?

So is indie the new word for emo? Or is it something different? Also I thought indie music was just another word for pop :p

Indie and emo are different, Emo is far too mainstream.

"The avant-garde way of life and common enjoyment in wit and culture that isn't "mainstream" but more importantly indie culture offers originality, but the idea of indie is independent so when you have followers of sort it somewhat kills the name.

Those associated with the Indie subculture are often involved with the local art and music scenes, and recently the growing international movie scene. They are often reviewed by peers or adults interested in the culture, but the whole point of being indie (originating from independent) is to have original, independent ideas and way of living."

I'm so indie that Stephen Malkmus was listening to me when he was underground.

I'm so indie that when I went to India, the rest of the nation had to settle for calling their country 'A'.

I'm so indie that I havent heard of anyone mentioned in this thread, or anyone posting in this thread.

But I do have an ironic appreciation for them.

I'm so indie that I don't listen to music anymore. I just watch obscure foreign films, then discuss them with my friends who havent seen them.

The word 'indie' is a shortened form of 'independent', and when used to talk about music it originally referred to bands that made music without the support of a major record label. They may be on an indie label, or they may not be on a record label at all (you might see this called 'DIY').

Strictly speaking, it means any band or artist who's signed to a record label which isn't one of the 'big four' - Sony, Warner, EMI and Universal. This doesn't really work because there are a lot of other record labels which have a major label ethic - such as Fat Wreck Chords and Sub Pop. You might not want to label bands on those labels as 'indie'. Record labels that have, or had, an indie ethic include Sarah Records, Elephant 6, Dischord, Level Plane and Kill Rock Stars.

Indie is more often associated with a sound nowadays - it's generically used to label any guitar music which is 'alternative' which isn't hard rock or metal. So The Killers, White Stripes, Strokes and BRMC will all get lumped under indie, even when they're on a major label. You could also argue that the word 'indie' refers to an attitude, or just to a method of making music - you might see The Flaming Lips or Radiohead labelled as indie for this reason. It gets more complicated when you consider that you'll hear about 'independent hip hop' or 'independent jazz' as well.

So yeah, I think I've said enough. Basically, it's really confusing and nobody gives a damn apart from retarded music nerds who have nothing better to do with their lives.

Or from an emo POV: Indie and emo are different, Indie is far too mainstream.

Sounds like the same load of crap to me (the "lifestyle" that is, not the music).

indie sucks. nuff said

Kinda what this post was about :p

Although some of the music that might be considered indie (Trail of dead for example) is actually very good. It is just the attitude indie fans tend to take that sucks.

I remember when indie used to be pretty synonymous with BritPop, so Blur, Oasis, Pulp, Bluetones, Ocean Colour Scene, Dodgy, Boo Radleys, etc etc etc...

Dunno what's happened now.

I'm so indie, I can be post-modern and enjoy pop, punk and every band who has ever 'sold out' in an ironic way and yet still be indier than the current indie-kids cos I'm older than them :D

I'm the only person left alive buying Shed Seven albums. That's gotta put me in the top three at least... I liked them after they were famous, which they never were because they were unappreciated in their own time. :p

In that case I suggest you grab the album at the top of this list (if you don't already have it). Your life up 'til now will by comparison feel empty after listening to it. :)
