How is a 2004 MX5 exempt from ULEZ?

Here's a query for yourselves.

An ad popped up today for a 2004 MX5 1.8. The reg being FA04PYZ.
It's advertised as ULEZ exempt. My initial reaction was, no, that's not possible.

Had a look on the ULEZ checker and the car has it's Euro compliance level as "not applicable".
So the car really is ULEZ exempt. I didn't think that any NB was.

Any idea how/why this could be?
Just really curious.

My 2003 ST170 is ULEZ compliant according to TfL. All I'm eligible for is the standard congestion charge.

I also don't have to pay in any of the current or upcoming CAZ zones around the country

I can drive into any of the low emission zones in the 2006 3.8L petrol, but our 1.7L 2012 diesel is not allowed. I’m not sure I agree with which vehicles are allowed and those that aren’t, but the ULEZ is definitely a positive thing.

It's not a very good system and has lots of irregularities. For instance, my dad's 2003 XJ should be compliant, except the system said it wasn't. He had to get a certificate of conformity from the dealer and send it to TFL, who then updated the list to make his particular car compliant. Took months and they didn't want to do it at first despite him having all the paperwork.

My 6.2 V8 Merc C63 is exempt. Even if I wasn't, I think I should be able to drive wherever the hell I want when I pay £650 a year for VED.

I think the ULEZ zone tends to focus on the vehicles that cause a lot of breathing difficulties, like particulates and nitrogen dioxide(?). These tend to be big on diesels. So whereas my big V8 produces a lot of CO2, which is obviously a greenhouse gas, but it doesn't cause breathing difficulties, because it emits much less particulates/NO2 than pre Euro 6 diesel

My Volvo is ok for ulez, but obviously congestion charge.

My motorcycle is NOT ok for ulez, but obv you don't pay congestion.

Go figure....

Morale of the story, don't go near London.

Doesn’t make much sense but I’m not complaining….
My old 2001 Honda Integra - ULEZ payable
My 2002 Ferrari 360 - ULEZ exempt

Never did understand that one. I think some cars it’s possible to get data updated with a letter from manufacturer but sounds like a real pain to do.

I really hope the proposal to expand ULEZ to the whole of London is postponed. In this financial climate it’s just not fair to force people to change their cars, especially now the government have reduced most subsidies on electric vehicles. Used car prices are still crazy high so changing is even more expensive in this environment.

My place of work is Heathrow which will be within the expanded ULEZ zone. My 2010 diesel is not ULEZ compliant, so I will need to upgrade before August. I have no desire to upgrade as the car is still serving me perfectly well at 135,000 miles. Surely it’s more green to keep my current car going than upgrading? Also, my car is hardly the most polluting thing at Heathrow!

When the original LEZ came in in 2012 it was SO OBVIOUS that manufacturers were in on the deal. IIRC Vauxhall had a deal where you could trade in your non compliant van against a brand new one. Just driving sales really.

My friend had just bought a knackered van aiming to start a business and it more or less killed that idea when he had to get rid of it :(

A good rule to live by, unfortunately councils/government love this **** and are rolling out at cities all over the UK, Bristols goes live shortly.

Doesn't seem to do much to reduce emmisions, just push it elsewhere, such a dumb scheme.
