How long before Plasma RIP ?

Good points....guess we are all waiting for oled, having displays just a few mm thick is gonna be stunning. I want it now though :-)

does the thickness really matter? the units aint gonna be mm thick and wall mounts wont be flush!! I have had plasma's for the last 7 years (paid £3k for 1st one!!) kids have lcd in bedrooms but still prefer the crispness of the plasma, theirs still just look like bright tft monitors to me (samsung 32" and hitachi 37")

personally with tv's just buy what you can afford at the time to suit your needs, I remember when I had to go back to a 28" crt 3 yrs ago after a 42" plasma and was gutted but once you start watching something you dont really notice the size or clarity tbh (once you get over the wow factor do you really look out for the difference or just watch/immerse into whats on the screen?)

Doom mongers have been saying for years plasma is dead. But the best TV's out there are Panasonic Plasma's (and Pioneer kuro). LG plasma's have got a good rep for PQ as well now and samsung still make plasma's. Sony couldn't afford 2 R&D's in 2 different technologies. Pioneer has pulled out because they couldn't make them as cheap as Panasonics. And was losing money per set they sold.

But personally I expect OLED be the death of plasma and LCD.

There's not much wrong with CRT technology in terms of PQ though- it's just the box it comes in!

As far as I'm aware Panasonic (Mastush!ta) were manufacturing all of Pioneer's panels under licence? I think it's been a fair while since Pioneer actually made a panel.

Sony never made a single plasma, they rebadged and when they went LCD only its because no one would supply them plasma and not the bull manure excuse they gave at the time (didnt help that Sony plasmas were rubbish)

Mind Sony dont make LCD's either so nothing has really changed.

Pioneer made all their plasmas, Panasonic bought some of the licences and staff when Pioneer pulled out.

Seeing the 15" LG OLED screen going for £1800 odd is painful but they are seemingly the future - just need the manufacturers to hurry up and get to grips with decent size screens (there are some early 32" screens around).

Having bought into plasma recently myself and persuaded a mate to do the same (both Panasonic 2010s) I wouldn't want to look at LED/LCD as by the time my 50V20B is tired and old OLED will have come on in leaps and bounds and will be a serious next step!

For everything I've used it for plasma has been perfect, and given that the TV is in a corner the fact it's not LED thin doesn't matter - it's still far thinner than the 32" LCD it replaced :)

As far as Pioneer is concerned didn't they, as a last ditch move before giving in, get Panasonic to manufacture the TVs for them - I seem to recall hearing on the AVForums home cinema podcast sometime in the last few years that that was the last thing they tried before shutting up shop and a bunch of engineers subsequently being pinched by Panasonic not long after!

I've still not seen any Tv that matches my 9G Kuro. Some of the new LED backlit slims ones look good, however the shop setups almost look fake as they are that sharp

I was a plasma fanboy for years but decided to compromise and go with an LCD (Sony 55ex503) due to the room it was going in was very bright with lots of windows. A high gloss plasma screen would have been very reflective.
All my tv's are calibrated and I can honestly say watching in an evening in a darkened room the LCD is superb, I prefer it to my Panasonic G10 which is in the living room. Fair enough it's a couple of seasons old but I'll certainly be buying LCD from now on.

And so the debate goes on. Which I guess is why at the end of the day it will be a long time before Plasma is dead. OLED looks nice, but it has as many problems as it solves. Like the 3 different LEDS degrade at different rates so after 15000 hours you may find OLED sets where the red channel is still outputting near 100% but the Blue has degraded to 70%. Secondly screen retention on OLED is much worse than 1st gen Plasmas (currently). I guess as technology improves, so will these shortcommings, but for now it is still a 2 horse race, plasma / lcd.

Yep Panasonic made the panels for Pioneer from 2008 I believe. Pioneer made their own electronics.

Since their pullout, Pioneer have licenced the Kuro tech to Panasonic (although Panasonic won't use the term Kuro on their products)

Personally still think the picture from my Pioneer 5090 plasma is still amongst the best you will ever get from a tv, Im just hoping that very large (55"+) tv's arent forcing 3D tech on everyone for ever more, I dont believe 3d will catch on in a huge way, and to pay premium for tech I dont want.....its just not going to happen

In the next couple of years I believe Panasonic will come good - I think it will take at least one or two more refreshes of the range before it starts to become a really good plasma (after all it was only the last couple of Pioneer ranges before they were killed off completely when this became such a fabulous tv to have)

tbh i wouldnt sell my old plasma for either the more recent lcds or plasma screens, it just wouldnt be worth it nothings really improved in a major way over the past few years

Depends how old it is. About 3+ years ago the black levels took a massive leap forward which make quite a difference.

I love my Panasonic Plasma. For some reason the colours just look so much richer than the current crop of LCD's

We have an old plasma tele in my house, and in my opinion it really isn't anything special, the picture quality isn't all that I'd expect from a 52inch screen, especially when comparing them to some of the better looking ones you see in your local electrical shop. I personally wouldn't buy one though, I'd go for an LCD.
