How long before Plasma RIP ?

You say a £1600 LCD may have a better picture than a £1000 Plasma. You're probably right. However, a £1600 plasma will still give a far better picture than a £1600 LCD. If you want to kid yourself that bright colours and brightness/contrast through the roof is a 'good' picture, then buy your LCD and remain stuck in your ways.

who said good

i said i liked. You cant tell people what to like ..

Well I done my bit this yr for Plasma and bought two new Panasonic Plasma's to replace my aging Panasonic commerical sets..

Couldn't be happier !!!!! I even went out and bought a couple of the Panasonic THX Demo Blurays just to gawp at the pic quality.. Wife thinks I'm odd, but hey if she doesn't want to sit down and enjoy along with me, then her loss !

I do think Plasma is still a superior technology - with contrast ratios in the millions and frame-rates well into the hundreds I don't think they can be beaten at that price point.

However, I did have to go for a 42" LCD because I didn't quite have the money for a Plasma screen and this particular screen was on offer and it was hard for me to find a well specced Plasma 42" (because my bedroom isn't all that big).

Hopefully I've not made the wrong decision!

Kind Regards,

David

Not at all- if you're happy with the TV, then you're happy!

I prefer Plasma, with a 46" Panny in the living room. But I've got a perfectly good LCD in the bedroom, with a PC Media Center attached. With it being left on a lot, often with a static display, I'd probably worry if it was a Plasma.

As always it's often worth waiting until the manufacturer's announce next year's models, then the current stock is sold off cheap. I got my 46G10 for £750 last Christmas doing exactly that.

I've still not seen any Tv that matches my 9G Kuro. Some of the new LED backlit slims ones look good, however the shop setups almost look fake as they are that sharp

I love my kuro and its great for gaming(no image retention, 100's hours play), images have such depth, like a 3d quality. No LCD can match it.

Still nothing to better the Pioneer Kuro, if Panasonic keep breaking the somthing to fix another it's going to be a while until Panasonic release something viable. I can't watch a any panasonic plasma from the lest 2 years without getting a headache and nauseous thanks to the neo-pdp flicker which is there but not a deal breaker on other plasma's. this years latest addition to the panasonic flaws is horrid motion artifacts at 50hz.

I had this years latest and greatest 3d 50" VT20, with in a day i was hunting the free-adds for a pioneer 9g kuro.

Flicker is a bit of a subjective criteria though. Obviously if you suffer then some models without a true 3:1 pulldown for 24p material are a no-go (and so are most cinemas!), but if you're not affected then it's not a consideration. I- like most people- can't even detect it on a supposedly "bad" 24p TV at 1:1.

After looking for a while all over the place and seeing the TV's working in comet the plasma's were beating the LCD/LED's hands down from what i could see.

Also compared to my brothers 40" Sony LCD which is 2years old, my mums brand new Sony 40" and my sisters 32" samsung, which were all top of the range sets and cost more than my brand new plasma, picture quality is no where near as good as mine.

You cant beat a 50" plasma TV in your bedroom :)

You'd think but that's really not the case. Neo PDP's flicker almost a design feature. it's got nothing to do with refresh rates, normal flicker is much more tolerable. Neo PDP's flicker because to make appear to go brighter. Weather the panel can really manage this brightness or not, maybe it's a power saving feature, or an excuse to use cheep power supplies that cannot supply the power to make them go that bright is debaiable. Ether way it makes good Colourometers used to calibrate them ether have readings fluctuate all over the shop or the crap ones just give an average reading that your eyes appear to see differently. If you see it it'll slap you in the face give you a headache and also probably make you nauseous even if you can't see it. you'll see it if you sensitive to flicker in the 65+ hz region.

Sure, not disagreeing, my point is that if you're susceptible to flicker then certain panels won't do it for you. I've got a 46" G10 and can't see any flicker, where others have reported being able to. Mine calibrated no problems (well, as well as a G10 can), we didn't see any fluctuating readings.

I guess it's conceivable that Panasonic chucked out batches with substandard components causing issues. As with anything though, at the end of the day it's best to demo the set you're going to buy. (I didn't, but could have been lucky)

Talking about 60' Plasma's, I'm after something of that size for my cinema room. Seeing the LG 60PK590 for £1200 which fits nicely into the budget. Actually, it comes in £300 below budget. Does anyone have any experiences with this bad boy?
