How long do you keep your car?

Much to my own annoyance I seem to be incapable of keeping a car (on the road) longer than 6 months before I get itchy feet.

Reading stuff like this depresses me. I wish I had the discipline to keep something longer than 5 minutes

Do exhaustive amounts of endless research on what you want next. Test drive everything. Dont buy something just because you fancy it - research it and drive it and see if you love it. That way when you do eventually buy, you buy right and can keep it for ages.

I'm already doing loads and loads of research and I dont plan to change before next Summer. When next Summer arrives, I will know exactly what I want, exactly what goes wrong with them, exactly what to avoid, what to get, whether it suits, etc etc

civic vti - a year (ish)
civic-r ep3 - 5 months
civic-r ek9 - 3 years
clio 182 - owned it a few months

tempted with another ep3 soon.

Thought you hated EP3s?

i don't know what else to consider and they can be had for 4.5k these days:( not sure i hated it, i just always wanted an ek9 and hated how people saw the ep3 as the 'real' type R. Anyway, i'm not that bothered these days, lost interest in cars big style lately.

but cheap ep3, de-cat, spoon n1 = win?

edit: or a downward pointy J's:p;)

I can't remember having any car for more than a year, other than those rarely used like the 325 or the Strada.

I've had around 20 cars in 5 years of driving, although some were bought to sell on.

First car: almost 4 years, Oct 1997 - Jun 2001
Second car: over 8 years, Jun 2001 - Jul 2009
Current car: over 1 year, Jul 2009 - present

No plans to change what I have at the minute for a good few years yet.

2-3 yrs normally but already had the Cayman over 2 years and intend keeping it for quite a while yet

Do you ever wonder if you'll manage to pick one good enough to actually keep? I mean seriously, 20 cars in 5 years? You might as well just hire them from Avis or something.

Stop criticising my thorough exploration of options for my next car then :P

That said, only about 6 of them were serious cars, the rest were "runarounds*", stop-gaps and cars bought to sell on and make a quick buck.

*Yes, I hate the term, too.

Current car is a Z4 2.5 litre that i've had nearly 3 months. Loving it so far, so guess i'll keep it until it starts to become unreliable / cost me money. Or if I get bored :p

Car I had least amount of time was my previous car, an RX8 which I had for a year. Loved driving it, but it was unreliable (engine problems) and drank obscene amounts of fuel and oil.

Car history is 12 cars in 19 years of driving. So I guess I keep my cars an average of 1.583333' years :o

I've only been the registered keeper of my M-reg saab 900 for just under 2 years, but the car has been in the family for 12 years. The car before that was an F-reg saab 9000 which we had for just over 10 years. (2 cars in 20 years and not a single proper break down either)

I'll be keeping the 900 for a long time yet. Got a lot of work still to do, and the amount of money i've spent improving things makes it stupid to try and sell it.

Current car: owned for 2 days so far. Peugeot 407 2.0hdi se lux. No idea how long I'm going to keep it. So far seems perfect for our needs, comfortable and not bad on fuel.

Last car was a focus bought as a stop gap after writing off the previous car

Saab 9000 aero: 6 months only reason was I crashed it

Focus 1.6: got rid for the Saab after 2.5 years

Nissan micra 1.0: owned for 2 years. Got rid as I wanted an upgrade!

Yaris - 1 year exact, mostly for new driver insurance purposes.
Celica GT - Few days shy of 2 years now, cant see myself selling for a long time, really long time.

That's more cars than I've had pairs of trainers in 6 years, and I love buying trainers :D

Same!

I've had my EP3 for 3 years. The only other car I've owned was my Astra 1.4, which I kept for about 3 years. I plan on keeping my EP3 for a while yet (almost had to sell it this year, but turned out I didn't, thankfully).

My current car the 1985 Audi ur quattro Coupe Turbo I've had about a year and Do Not intend on selling.

Before that I had a 1959 VW 'Lowlight' Karmann Ghia, absolutely loved it! and didn't intend on selling it but I became ill, lost my job so had to :(

Before that I had a 1967 VW Beetle, was my first car and again absolutely loved it but when I saw the Karmann Ghia I had to have it and the Beetle just never got any attention anymore so it went.
