How long do you keep your cpus for?

I keep it until I give the machine away, usually about 7-10 years. I have plenty of use for crusty old machines.

A 586 runs my mt-daapd server.

I'm on my fourth this year- XP-M 2600+> Opty 146> E6400> E6600.

I get bored easily :p

Ive gone; Pentium 120>Pentium 200mmx> Pentium2 350> Duron 800>AthlonXP 2000>Athlon64 3000 (Which im using at the moment) Im planning on getting a Kentsfield next. So im getting a fair bit of usage out of each cpu. I tend to give my parents my old computer when I upgrade, then take the one it replaces off them and use it to play around with(servers etc)

Well so far this year, ive had 3000+ Winnie, 3700+ SanDiego, X2 4200+, and now Core 2 Duo E6400

I will most likley keep the current cpu fore a while until the rest of my spec is sorted ( more RAM, better mobo )

Depends, have had in the last 12 months - :
Intel Pentium M 715, 735, 730, 750, Yonah T2500 + T2600, Merom T7400 (lasted ~ 4 days) Conroe E6600.
AMD:
A64 3500 Newcastle, Opty 144 and 2 * X2 3800

Most get upgraded whenever the cash is available/I fancy a change

erm, quite a while really. unless i get a good deal on the cpu i dont bother. i went from a p3-350 to an x1600 pally, than an +1800 tbred 'a' which i borked, to a 1700+ tbred 'b' which i eventually sold and is still going today. then it was a64 3000+ winchesterville. which the gf had. then a 3200+ venice, now my opteron 148.

Thats over the course of...well, years. really. lol.

I generally get "upgrade-o-mania" after about 18 months so currently debating about putting an X2 in place of my Athlon 64. I generally give my cast-offs to my Dad but he's gone way ahead of me and just bought Core 2 Duo. So now I just have to wait a little longer and go to Core 2 Quadro. :D

Until the 'next big thing' is released.

Last 3 years - A64 ->A64x2->Opty->Opty Dual->Conroe

i guess i have a wierd cycle thing with mine, its not really got a time plan, i just upgrade when i feel the processor i want is in a decent price band, basically i work in a cycle of three, getting rid of the fourth one everytime i get a new one to the most deserving family member at the time. i think this came about because i use a couple of pcs for totally different things. i always upgrade with a definate plan in mind of whats going into where afterwards. at the moment ive got an xp4000 in a shuttle which i use for gaming, an X2 3800+ in a machine that gets used for rendering/other more demanding tasks, and my third pc is my mess around pc, for which ive actually just bought a shiny new (ok only new in the fact its been unused lol) opteron 144 for what i thought was a very decent price of £33. thats going into my DFI to see how far i can push it before it falls over, slightly off topic but there you go

Starting in the year 2000.... duron 700 (2years) Athlon xp2200+ t'bred (2 years) [by now i have discovered overclocking :D ] Athlon xp-m 2600+ (along with a 1700+ and 1800+ for playing about with) - Still have the 2600+.. A64 3500+ (just got rid of it, had it just over a year) and now onto an 805d... temporary chip, building a conroe rig, and thats a nice cheap clockable chip to tide me over :)

I've just done my first upgrade for 4 years gone from a barton 2800 & R9800pro to E6600 & X1900XT & tbh my 2800 still did anything i threw at it... Albeit 3 hours slower :o
I did want to upgrade 2 years ago but it was the cost to performance ratio that did not impress me with anything on the market, right upto 3 months ago when c2d came along. :)

I probably upgrade every one to two years at the moment. I used to upgrade more frequently when I was at college though! Often my old chips get given to my Dad or my brother - my Dad's still using my 1GHz TBird over 6 years on!

My CPU progression has been:

80286 16(?) MHz -> 80386 DX 25 -> 80486 DX 50 -> IDT WinChip C6 200MHz -> AMD K6/2 350MHz -> AMD Athlon Thunderbird 1GHz -> AMD Athlon XP2100+ (early one with the Palamino core) -> Intel Mobile Pentium 4 3.06GHz -> Intel Pentium 4 2.8GHz (both on the 533fsb with no HT) -> AMD Opteron 146 (Socket 940!) -> AMD Athlon 64 FX62
