How long does it take you to boot your PC

Got the DFI installed, latest 7.4 cats, eraser and 1 or 2 other apps.

I'm now booting at 38 - 40 seconds, seems to vary depending on the boot, but always within 40 seconds right now.. :D

I'm sure that will change once i start plonking all my software back on... :)

As to defragging, diskeeper defrags everytime my screensaver comes on... keeps things fast.

mine has become really slow at loading up xp something like 5 minutes and i beleive my install is a bit knackered as some programs wont start like fear and quake 4 screws up also the harddrive is a 13 gig from 1999 :P

got vista on a drive from 2001/2 and that loads total rapid probably about 20 or 30 seconds at most on same comp :)

Gaming comp- (although a lot of this time was post screen and poorly setup boot sequence for speed :p)
50 seconds

e4300@3ghz
2gb geil 6400
1950 pro
250gb 16mb wd sata 2

Ill try on my normal comp later/ tomorow

3000+ winchester
1gb geil 3200
6800
80gb 2mb pata (boot)
80gb 8mb sata

things that siverly effect my start up times are:

1: x-fi/x-fi drivers installed
2: having ide enabled

both don't really make any sense but tripple my start up times.

windows loads pretty much instantly otherwise (bar goes across 1.5 times)

I quickly scanned it before and didnt notice it :P

latest 7.4 cats, erase all different apps?

Just installed XP again today after switching out the motherboard for a DFI i picked up on the Members Market. Eraser is a program for securely removing files or wiping drives properly, it takes far longer then the regular recycle bin, but they'll be unretrievable. Have now installed a good wedge of aps including anti-virus, messenger, utorrent, uxtheme patcher, custom theme, few custom aps for XP like one for displaying folder sizes in explorer aswell as file sizes... etc....

Should kick my boot time down a notch, gonna time again next time i bootup.

I stuck with the trusty Audigy 2 ZS, still a cracking little card, thats why we have them in all 3 PC's here... all brought on the cheap from MM and an auction site.

my xp loading bar gets about half way across then im on .
It all depends what you use your pc for, like me, all i do is game and surf and therfore can get away with only 4 services running(only after pc has being tweaked. ie: icons, wallpaper, screensaver, windows sounds, system restore,xp built in games, recycle bin......the list goes on.....all disabled/removed)

mine takes between 50-60 seconds, seems to freeze for a few seconds loading xfire and my bluetooth drivers so if i got rid of those i guess i could hit 40-45 seconds

45 seconds or so, with only messenger, hangs on one of the beginning parts for a few seconds.... for no reason at all.

You're exactly like me. I've gotten down to 16 processes in task manager. It's funny when people ask: "Why does it take so long to boot?" I ask them to post a screenshot of the processes tab in Task Manager and they have, like, 50+ processes sitting there. It's to be expected in Vista, but with that kind of weight in XP you can't really expect to have a responsive system.

As g00dsh0t said though, depends what you use the PC for though, if its a standalone PC, you have little use for a good wedge of the services. If you're a pure gamer then it stands to reason you disable most of them, however i've found some software i use is dependant on various services so i don't have that luxury. A fast boot time doesnt really account for much though unless you turn your PC on and off a lot, personally mine stays on most the time, so its irrelevant to me really.

I'll go over my processes, ones i need, and i can tell you now i do need some of these.

itype.exe - keyboard, need for hotkey usuage
MOM.exe - part of the ATI CCC
atievxx.exe (x 2) again part of the ATI drivers
CCC.exe - you guessed it ATI again
CTHELPER.exe - Audigy related exe, can be stopped though
nod32krn.exe - AV
FolderSizeSvc.exe - been using this a while to show folder sizes in explorer
DkService.exe - Diskeeper, keeps system defragged when i'm alway
csrss.exe - windows process
smss.exe - windows process
alg.exe - windows process
System Idle Process - windows process
System - - windows process
winlogon.exe - - windows process
services.exe - windows process
explorer.exe - windows process
lsass.exe - windows process
UltraMon.exe - needed for ultramon as i have dual screens
UltraMonTaskbar - needed for ultramon as i have dual screens

Then of course theres the svchost.exe's..... (5 of those but i'm connected to a network with other PC's with various network shares being used)

So far though i have 19, out of which i could proberly lose 3 so that only leaves me with 16, not including svchost. I'm guessing your PC must be running on the bare minimal to achieve that, and i honestly hope thats because you have an older system that really needs to be setup like that, as i honesty cannot understand why someone with a Core2Duo rig would really need to be that finnicky about services, after all a dual core should eat them up for breakfast compared to mine, yet mine is running along just fine and dandy.

18 times the XP loading screen goes by.

If anyone knows why I'd like to know. :p

On a serious note, to get to the desktop I'd say about 50-60 odd seconds.

Vista Ultimate 32 bit and PC in sig.

my xp bar goes around about 8 times on my main pc in my sig...running xp pro, but it benchmarks fine exactly how it should...probably 45 seconds to boot fully due to the xp bar problem.

just installed 2000 pro on an old laptop and it has 18 processes running and thats running on a network with extra services perhaps running that could be stopped if it was stand-alone - I wish xp had this little processes at default.

t31os, the optimisation is really necessary on my laptop. Getting around 15-20fps in BF2142, a few extra fps makes a world of difference! I do have this thing running on the bare minimum, because i'm sure the aging 3400+ and ATI 9600 wouldn't be too happy if i started clogging the thing up. What's your commit charge once you've booted up?
