You're exactly like me. I've gotten down to 16 processes in task manager. It's funny when people ask: "Why does it take so long to boot?" I ask them to post a screenshot of the processes tab in Task Manager and they have, like, 50+ processes sitting there. It's to be expected in Vista, but with that kind of weight in XP you can't really expect to have a responsive system.
As g00dsh0t said though, depends what you use the PC for though, if its a standalone PC, you have little use for a good wedge of the services. If you're a pure gamer then it stands to reason you disable most of them, however i've found some software i use is dependant on various services so i don't have that luxury. A fast boot time doesnt really account for much though unless you turn your PC on and off a lot, personally mine stays on most the time, so its irrelevant to me really.
I'll go over my processes, ones i need, and i can tell you now i do need some of these.
itype.exe - keyboard, need for hotkey usuage
MOM.exe - part of the ATI CCC
atievxx.exe (x 2) again part of the ATI drivers
CCC.exe - you guessed it ATI again
CTHELPER.exe - Audigy related exe, can be stopped though
nod32krn.exe - AV
FolderSizeSvc.exe - been using this a while to show folder sizes in explorer
DkService.exe - Diskeeper, keeps system defragged when i'm alway
csrss.exe - windows process
smss.exe - windows process
alg.exe - windows process
System Idle Process - windows process
System - - windows process
winlogon.exe - - windows process
services.exe - windows process
explorer.exe - windows process
lsass.exe - windows process
UltraMon.exe - needed for ultramon as i have dual screens
UltraMonTaskbar - needed for ultramon as i have dual screens
Then of course theres the svchost.exe's..... (5 of those but i'm connected to a network with other PC's with various network shares being used)
So far though i have 19, out of which i could proberly lose 3 so that only leaves me with 16, not including svchost. I'm guessing your PC must be running on the bare minimal to achieve that, and i honestly hope thats because you have an older system that really needs to be setup like that, as i honesty cannot understand why someone with a Core2Duo rig would really need to be that finnicky about services, after all a dual core should eat them up for breakfast compared to mine, yet mine is running along just fine and dandy.
