How long to get a replacement bank card ?

Google pay connect all your digital cards never ever worry about 20th century payment methods again.

Eat the bugs, own nothing, be happy.
Once the card was reported lost/needed replacement the number linked to the google pay account would have been deactivated so the google pay wouldn't work because it no longer had a bank/card account to charge to.

Am looking at getting a credit card so I got some kind of backup card for if this happens again
It's exactly this sort of situation that is the reason I have two credit cards and only use the credit cards online. At one point because I was buying a lot of stuff online (from legitimate stores) I was averaging a replacement card at least once a year as it turns out a lot of retailers in the early 00's to mid 10's had very poor security for their payment systems, and American B&M stores would accept faked cards quite happily (whilst my bank wasn't always on the ball, either because the amounts stolen were low at first, or because my bank's system couldn't tell the difference between my weekly online purchases from America and someone buying stuff in person in America).

I thought banks could issue multiple virtual cards along a whim.

Revolut can.
My Swedish bank has a digital card I can link to anything.
Maybe I'm missing something.

We have to pay for our physical cards here tho so maybe this is why?

Should only take a few days, but with it being so close to Christmas maybe a few day more.

You should be able to take cash out at your bank anyway, just make sure you've got ID with you.

Incorrect, this isn't true. Google Wallet uses tokenisation, which generates a unique virtual card number for transactions. It's up to the bank if they cancel this virtual card or not, but Santander didn't for me when I lost a card.

Santander informed me last month that they were replacing my card as they thought there was a risk of someone else using it. There was no chance of that happening so I don't know why they came up with that, anyway the new card took almost two weeks to turn up.
Often what that means if at some point the card has been used somewhere they suspect has been compromised/had a lot of cards used and then ended up being compromised.

IE if they know X retailer has had a breach they'll often replace cards used there previously that haven't yet been used fraudulently because it's far cheaper for them to issue a replacement than the loss from even a small fraudulent transaction.
I think they've got a lot more proactive about that after some of the smarter criminal gangs started targeting some of the US retail chains and managing to compromise in some cases hundreds of locations for months.

Has anyone had to get a replacement bank card lately ?

As am just wondering how long they take to come these days

I ordered one first thing Monday morning (9th December) and have still not received it yet.
The card details are likely already in your online banking.

add the card to google pay or apple pay and it should work.

if you want cash ask a supermarket or somewhere for cashback, they will add the £20 or whatever on to your bill and give it you as change

I used to work in the last and stolen cards dept for RBS group when I was a student and back then I'm sure we quoted 2-4 working days. Usually I would've said it should've definitely turned up by now but it is Christmas so who knows at this point.

But yeah as mentioned above look into if it is on the app already and you can add to Apple Pay etc. If you are nervous about messing up first time you use it then try the self service at Tesco or wherever at least then you don't have the "pressure" of messing around with your phone trying to figure it out whilst a checkout lady stares at you. Once you've used phone payment you'll never look back. I hardly ever take physical cards out with me these days.

apart from when the reader says you moved the phone too fast..

then your pushing and pulling the phone back and fourth for about a minute wondering why its not trying to read the damn phone.
some of the tesco checkouts seem to have extremely weak readers too, had to try all sorts of angles with my phone at one the other week.

99% they work, but the 1% when they don't really makes me want to carry a card around as a backup

If you are with Barclays you can walk in store and they will make you one while you wait. Not every branch can do it but certainly several can. They have a branch finder tool that has the emergency replacement card option so you can jump on and use that.

Given how they're shutting branches, i suspect it would be faster to wait for the post :p (and no I'm not at all annoyed they closed their branch in an expanding town down and now I have to travel at least 30 minutes to get to one).
