How long would you wait for a yet to be released GPU?

Could a Don do a poll for this thread please with the following options.:)

2 Weeks

1 Month

2 Months

3 Months

6 Months

1 Year

It would be interesting to see what most people would do when it comes to waiting for new tech.

My personal view is if I need a new piece of tech for gaming I don't believe in waiting very long and will buy asap.

1 month maximum for me, life is too short to wait any longer. Accidents happen, diseases happen etc!

That said I'm currently 'waiting' for Vega. I'm going to pick one up for sure, in the meantime I'm using a 1070, so not sure you can classify that as 'waiting', since I bought an alternative in the mean time.

I'm pretty impatient - i.e. say with the 1070/1080 release if a specific model I had my eye on wasn't out in a couple of weeks top I'd swap to something else.

If it was something I Knew I could afford and was a significant performance upgrade from anything currently available then maybe 2/3 months, but I'm pretty impatient with most things so would likely just buy what I could at the time.

The time I'm willing to wait is directly proportional to how awesome I believe that product will be.

The question is hard to answer really, because its not like there is a point in time where I'm waiting from. I've never got it in my head that one day in particular is the day I want to upgrade, and any time after that is waiting you know? Its more of a gradual thing from the day I upgrade where the itch for the next upgrade gets worse and worse until I'm tempted by a good enough deal to make me scratch it.

A long time.

Im still rocking a GTX 780 waiting for my next upgrade.

Thought I'd found it in GTX 1070, but now I think Im gonna buy an ultra wide free sync monitor so Vega it is.

Good question, if the performance increase is definitely going to worth it I'll wait the year, we know Navi and Vega 20 are going to be a amazing, I'll wait for them

Same as me, I'm waiting for the next 290x type card that will last ages.

Personally I found polaris and pascal to be a disappointment for a die shrink so I'll happily wait another year.

It all depends if I need a gpu right away or just to upgrade, if I need a gpu because the one i am using is broke I will buy one right away other wise I wait until a new gen is out and that means every few years as I don't games to much now.

I think the poll should say how long after the new gen is out, will you wait for the Amd/Ndivia to release their gpu, so both new gen gpu are out and then upgrade.

Voted 2 months but depends on my circumstances, ie, does what I have match my requirements at this moment, and also, more importantly I think is how much will I use the item at the moment.
If I was able to use the PC a lot for gaming right now I would have bought a TX (pascal) already. As I'm not, I'm willing to wait for either a Ti or an upgraded TX or next gen. I was tempted to get the 1080 over the weekend but again decided to hold off but at any time I may just decide to pick up the fastest available or one a little more value for money if I feel I wont be spending a lot of time gaming for a while still.

I do prefer to get the new tech early on or if I miss that window for whatever reason then I tend to wait it out.

Sorry, but this poll makes no sense. What exactly are you asking? If the GPU isn't released how will you buy it? You can't buy it until becomes available.

It is an interesting point but not easy to do.

What I mean by that is there is no fixed point when the new gen is out, if you look at the NVidia 10 series it started with the 1080 which was available in May and come the end of Oct they are still launching cards like the 1050 and 1050 Ti.

Presumably, how long would you wait for an unreleased but announced GPU as opposed to buying an existing available GPU?

Yes, most people upgrade with a new gen, so I would say 1070/80 verses vega is a harder choice to make than, 1060 verses 470/480 and as 1060 and 480 were out at the same time really it is easier to compare.

If it was a game changer that gave a huge boost over current cards I would probably wait 2-3 months unless my current card was struggling in which case I would probably buy a second hand card as a stopgap.

I suppose the circumstances do matter. I would wait for Vega if I thought it was worth waiting for...so I am waiting. However, recently my old mobo died and my wait for Zen had to stop as I couldnt be without a machine so I went with an i7 6700k setup. If I could have held out, I would have...as I want Zen to be a good competitive chip and if it was then I would have shifted back to AMD.

My lad will probably get a Zen based setup if AMD come good and do the business next year. He'll get my old Fury Tri-X and I'll get a Vega card, if it is indeed any good.

So I better say 6 months in that Poll...I think that would be about it.
:)
